Default Turbonetics Kit on Stock Block- Low PSI = Safe?

Hey everyone

well, ive been looking into various ways of turbo charging my new Z, and although i am fairly happy with the performance, like we all do, im getting the FI itch.

Now, i like to think im fairly well clued up when it comes to FI and the Z and have reached the conculsion that, being in the UK, with the LACK of people like GT Motorsports and Sharif, there is no real way of getting FI on a stock block and sleeping well at night, it just wouldnt happen.

The only tuners that i would trust are TDI , Abbey motorsport, and the guys that did 'baptists' APS TT rebuilt/install.

They all want Mega $ for the labour, near on $160 an hour. So im looking at $8000 in labour for an engine out/rebuild/turbo install/ reinstall and drive out, thats with NO DYNO, that is a nessacary $1800 extra!

so, as you can see, its not cheap.

Well, i am considering maybe a safer option which i dont think has ever been discussed.

How about the Turbonetics running a less than standard boost. Yeah ok, i may not make 400whp but id be fairly happy with 350whp and the knowledge that there is potential. Surely this would fullfill Nissans OEM saftey margin as im sure it has and no go over board and bent rods. . . .

has anyone do this, a de-tuned kit?

For the money I'd offer to fly Sharif out to tune it... Round trip flights to the UK can be had for less than $600 if he's willing to come out.

Install is expensive as hell IMO, but you could manage it yourself if you're inclined. Sooooo. But the kit, install it yourself. Fly Sharif (if he's willing) out to do the tune, and save a bundle of cash in the process.

LOL very good very good.

Dont think is dyno will fit in his suitcase though. . . .

no, im really not sure what he'd need to do it, but theres no way i have the facilities to build a short block up. I could install a turbo, and get it tuned by someone like TDI on low boost, but theres no way i haev the cash at present to get it rebuilt by them.

If i was gonna fly sharif over, it would be to tune a built block, not a stocky. . . just not worth it.

I've heard a few people running Tnetics with low boost. I think it still has the same risks but would be slightly less likely to kaboom.

If you're not going for huge power you can get away with most FI kits on a stock engine. You just need to make sure it's installed properly AND tuned. Those rates you posted are crazy though. It might be cheaper to sell your current car and just find a Z that is already boosted.

Anytime you run less boost you ar of course going to make less hp over stock. That should decrease the strain on the factory motor but as we have seen even a perfectly good motor can fail with a dyno tuned to perfection car..

Why not just buy a nitrous kit, a wideband O2 sensor, and install them both yourself.

Tuning it would be cake, and you could easily make 350 whp.

ive converted UK to US on a 1:2 scale. . . . current exchange rate. . . ish.. . .

yes, its a farce here. . .

Not too keen on the gas idea, seems abit of a ricers way to get more power. . . . makes sense on track cars and F&F but not a streeter IMO.

Its such a shame the stock engine isnt stronger. A BMW M3 E46 block will take 700bhp through it with stock internals and even stock intake and exhaust with the Horse Power Freaks turbo kit. . . thats insane, and im insanely jealous they have got it so easy. . .

Get the TN tuner kit, Buy a UTEC from me with a preloaded map for 93 octane and 440cc injectors It will run fine, and you can tune yourself.

He he

you dont know how much i would like to believe it is that simple, but taking a rational view of all the success and horror stories, its a logical step to get it built if im going to run ANY turbo kit, hence my 'on the safe side' running a lower boost.

As im in the UK, id need a map for 97/98 RON though wouldnt i?

regards
