Default What is the "Best" orientation for coolers?

I've seen many oil/power steering cooler installs and they all seem to be mounted different ways. With the inlet/outlet lines on the top, on the bottom and on the side.

I'm getting my oil and power steering cooler installed and was wondering which orientation is the "Best".

Inlet/Outlet orientation has nothing to do with the efficiency of the coolers what so ever. The avalibility of airflow however does. There are instances where you can only have a cooler in a certain loaction and the only way you can get the lines to it is by running them to one side of the cooler (top/bottom/side). It all has to do with where you can get them the air flow they need and how you can get the lines to them the most direct and short way with airflow being the primary objective.

Thanks.

At the moment I have no issues getting the airflow to them and I can pretty much mount them whatever orientation I would like. Just wondering if one orientation was better than the other.

you can put them in any orientation just keep the rise of fluid going upwards to a minimum

I stand somewhat corrected. It is somewhat more beneficial to have outlets on the top so that the coolers are self purging of air pockets. You should not have air pockets in the lines but if you were to it would be beneficial then.

So which is it? Looking to install tranny cooler and replace the actual tube+fin oil cooler with one to match the tranny cooler... pretty sure I'm going to mount it sideways so that the inlets/outlets coming from the sides going towards the center. Outlet on top? Outlet on bottom? Fight against gravity through the cooler or go with it? Help with purging air bubbles that would foul heat transfer surfaces by going from bottom to top? Etc...
