Default Built engines - Oil consumption

Just wondering if any of you guys with built engines would mind posting up how much oil your engine goes through, if any, and what state of tune you are in.

Appologies if this thread has been done before, but i thought it would make an interesting read.

I lose about 3 quarts of Mobil1 syth 10W30 Extended Performance every 3-4k miles. After 33k miles on the built motor, i have never seen any build up of oil in my catch can. Im willing to bet half of the oil im losing is out the APS turbo seals.

Good question Baptist.

I am still in my break-in period, but in roughly 1,500 miles I have added just under 1/2 quart.

Really depends on my driving style, but I in general, it is usually .5-1 quart every 3K miles.

I recently put a catch on the car, and it is accumulating about a tablespoon of oil every 300 miles. I compared this to my buddies built 4 banger turbo and he sees a very similar amout of oil in his catch

Oil consumption varies drastically, depending on how you drive the car. I will go through a quart in just 2 days on the track. But normally, I use about 1 extra throughout my typical 3000 mile oil change interval.

As long as the engine is making good power, and comp/leadown numbers are good, I am not overly concerned with oil consumption.

I am almost in the same position as you but I lose 2 quarts. I am taking it back to GTM to see if it is the APS turbo seals or something else.

I'm running Motul 5W-40 on an APS-TT built motor with a catch can. I'm seeing very similar results Zivman is seeing. Just a small amount of oil in the catchcan every 500 miles and I'm using less than a quart every 3K miles. I check it every weekend.

I keep the oil level just 'slightly' above the L marker on the dipstick and I always check the oil when the engine is cold or has cooled for over an hour.

Edit: This is on a GRD tune running 11psi (Daily Driver). I have around 12K miles on the built motor. I will say that when I was using 5w-30 Castrol before the switch to synthetic, I was using over a quart between 3K mile oil changes. I switched to synthetic after 8K miles on the new motor. The oil consumption for my setup went down after the switch to synth. 5W-40. I don't know if the brand of oil or the weight change made a difference, but I did notice a difference.

The forged pistons are the biggest reason the built motors burn oil. Since they expand more than cast pistons, they are installed with a looser tolerance and a bit of oil gets by them. Its normal and nothing to worry about.

+1

My car runs pretty smooth just driving around but after i give it a few highway pulls and heat the engine up for those forged pistons, everything runs super quite and smooth.

How about with Stock Internals? I'm burning the same amount of oil that most of you but I don't have forged internals... my engine have 35,000 miles on twin turbos, but since the begining burns oil (2 quart's per 3000 miles) oh and is getting this grey smoke off the exhaust everytime I go WOT, but not all the time I'm on WOT just the first seconds of WOT... any info will help!

btw I'm using 10/40 Mobil 1 but just the last change I was using 10/30... I have to check how much is loosing with the 10/40.

Have you guys tried catch cans? Its highly likely you're burning oil through the PCV, not by oil getting past the rings.

The Greddy TT came with a F.I. PVC, you can't put the catch can there...
