Default How to Add Shims

I have the TN kit with a cat and i think it is causing the car to run very rich. I had a EBC before and I don't think i want to mess with all that. I just want .5 -1 lbs more to lean it out just a little bit. I was reading that you can add shims to the wastegate.. i tried to look up info but was not able to find much on it. does anyone have any pictures of it installed and maybe show me what kind of shims <thickness> are you guys using? are they just washers?

Thanks in advance.

It's easier just to add a mechanicla boost controller. It is much more precise and if you get the shimming wrong you have to remove the WG and add or remove shims.

I have a used Turbo XS mechanical boost controller I'm looking to get rid of for $50 shipped.

Don't forget as the temp changes your boost setting will change as swell. You will want to adjust your boost up or down for seasonal temperature changes. Something a shim won't allow you to do. Even if you don't buy mine you should still look to solving the problem with a mechanical boost controller.

Cats or lower boost pressure shouldn't cause it to run rich if it's operating normally. I'd be more willing to bet it's a fuel system issue.

I agree the boost controller is the best way to go. I've never personally added shims on it but I assume you can find the right size washers etc.

Hey Jet, if you don't sell that MBC to anyone else first, I'm interested.

I know it may sound stupid.. but i just wanted the basic kit and don't want anything else to show on my car.. including a boost gauge.. so by putting a boost controller in it.. manual.. i won't know how much boost i'll be running.. i had some bad exp with manual boost cont and ended up blowing my 2 old worn out turbos on my 3000gt.. but then again the MBC was a pos i got off of ebay. home depot style.

how come no one has made a MBC with a dial on it so you know exactly how much psi your setting it to?

Funny you mentioned that because i've been driving my car around with a CEL on one of the banks O2 being rich.. and reading up on a lot it seems to be normal so i ignored it.. but last week i hit something on the road and it hit a few parts of the bottom of my car and then all of a sudden my CEL dissapeared and the car seem to be running much smoother.. maybe it hit a fault O2?

before it took a few weeks after i reset the ECU till i got the CEL again.. so i'll see if it ever comes back.

An MBC can't be callibrated for all wastegates. Plus anyone with a turbo/supercharger knows that a boost gauge is a necessity. It's just stupid to run without one. You will have to install at least a temporary boost gauge if you shim it anyway.
