Default Vortech finished, possible boost leak. Help!

just picked up my car after about a month. ran into a few issues but i finally picked her up today. shop couldnt locate my dyno but promised me that i would have a copy of it on monday. numbers are not good for my setup. they told me they got 340whp. with a 3.12 pulley and free flowing exhaust i would expect between 380whp to 400whp.

first thing that caught my attention was the lack of boost at mid range. i dont hit 4psi of boost on my AEM boost gauge until 6200rpm. i also noticed a hissing sound when under boost. sounds just slow leak from a tire. i didnt know if it was the vortech blow off valve causing this or its a sign of a boost leak.

taking her back on monday to have it checked out. your suggestions and opinions would be very appreciated.

thanks!

Def, a problem. I had the 3.12 stillen and crawford cats and i would guesstimate at 6200 rpm i was close to 9 psi.

I did hit a shade over 10 psi one night.

The bypass valve should not be hissing under boost and wot. You can however play with the throttle just into boost to get the valve to "sing", for lack of a better word.

mine doesnt hiss when under acceleration, just makes a whistle coming from the supercharger itself, possible leak in the plumbing or, bypass.

yeah, i can distinctly hear the whine from the blower but the hissing sound is there at any sort of throttle, left off and it goes away. car feels stock until 5k when it starts to get some boost 1 to 4 psi according to my aem boost gauge.

Hard to find boost leaks unless your on a dyno . Even then , they are hard to pin point .

A aftermarket plenum , IC pipe joints , and BOV is the first place to look . It could also be a slipping belt .

ONE THING FOR SURE ! The shop shouldnt have given you the car with out getting the install right the first time . Sounds like they know its not right , but are trying to pass it off and get you out the door . Take it back , till they get it right . GOOD LUCK !

ok, found part of my problem. the bolts on my upper plenum werent torqued enough, one bolt was sticking halfway out! I torqued them down pretty good today. still ive only seen 8psi once. seems that i max out at 6psi right at redline. i dont get out of vaccum until around 3k rpm. even then i hit around 1 to 2 psi until 5k where it goes slowly until redline to about 6psi. my afr goes from 14's to low 10's at wot starting at 3k rpm. i have no idea wtf is going on. i would like to get out of vaccum into boost a bit earlier, the car feels like its stock until 4k. possible belt slip issuses? help someone!

Do you have a Crawford plenum V5 or older ? You may need 2 or 3 gaskets . The older version Crawford's tend to warp a little when they weld them back together . The only real way to find out if it is still leaking , is to pressurize the whole system and listen for leaks that way .

well i finally saw 8psi for a moment at 6500rpm. so i guess torquing down the plenum bolts fixed my boost issue, i really cant believe how they could have left all the bolts so loose and with one sticking halfway out of the plenum. im running 3" exhaust with test pipes so ill probably never see anything higher then 8psi with my 3.12 pulley. Now my afr is really screwed up. Under boost at wot my afr is 10 flat. running a tad rich i think.

8psi is good with test pipes. Are you using the Vortech cone air filter? It's a big restriction, I'm changing mine next week.

I'd be scared to take my car over there. They took a whole month to do a one day job, and screwed it up. Maybe I misunderstood something.(shrugs)

That's not an accurate reading. Your gauge just stops reading at 10. You are probably running richer than that in some spots.
