Default 5AT Upgrades for boost.

Okay, One last thread =).

What to do about my tranny, I've looked into AWD, SPG tranny and SPG valve body/tq converter/cooler.

1. Stock 5AT's Breaking point for HP
2. VB/Cooler Breaking point for HP
3. SPG I'm assuming is 750-800HP, I can't make that much so that doesn't really matter.

But the real question is, a VB upgrade with install, TQ converter and cooler will probably be around 1500-2000, for 4400 I could have a new tranny put in.

I want to make 500 wheel. Do I need something more than the VB and TQ?

Stock 5AT tranny shouldn't go much past 325 rwhp but, i've seen guys make around 350 rwhp on it with no problems. VB and TC will get you to 500 whp and after that, it's time for a full upgrade or a TH350/400. If you plan on going past 500 rwhp then do it right the first time.

^^^ I disagree...I was putting down 385rwhp for over 2 years with no issues.Thats with a VB,TC, and tranny cooler.I'm at 425 rwhp now and still no issues....I believe the breaking point for the stock tranny is around 450.I'm putting down 460rwhp on race gas and a 35 shot, but thats only for the 1/4 mile. If you plan to go over 450rwhp do the complete upgrade by GTM and throw in a tranny cooler.

Yeah, I'm putting 355rwp now on a stock tranny, not even a cooler. I'll look into GTM, Because I'm going to build my engine, and if I got the goods might as well go all out.

Any other stories and opinons are still welcome.

It is in the radiator and its not very big, just enough to keep the trans cool enough for stock un modded cars.

Yeah, I replaced my Radiator and put in a 10*11*1.5 cooler for the tranny. Just wondering how much of an improvement this may have been.

I have the HiTek 10"x7.5"x4" with a 7" fan(flows 350cfm).Keeps the tranny much cooler than the little stock one in the radiator.Have had it for a couple years and tranny is working fine.

Moving to a GM tranny is not trivial. There are much better alternatives now that retain the amazing 5AT you've already got in your vehicle: GTM-5AT stage 3 and SGP racing tranny. Admittedly there are not many reviews on either yet, but they will trickle in I think...

Did you just randomly throw numbers around that you've heard before? 325 rwhp is close to the factory rating number (NUMBER) of 330 ft-lbs torque at the crank, where it's been factory rated at 100,000 shifts @ 330 ft-lbs torque. I've never seen that number (325 rwhp) being referenced as a safe "stopping point" of the stock transmission. I've also never heard solid answers to what the VB and TC will support, but I highly doubt it'll raise from "shouldn't go past 325 rwhp" all the way to "500 rwhp."

In all reality, who has destroyed their 5AT, built or not, from too much torque?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't torque the killer of the tranny?

I know of a 507 rwhp tc+vb upgraded 5AT... what other numbers have you heard of on the 5AT? The 507 is runnin fine so far (VRT JWT TT )

I destroyed my stock tranny with a 3500 stall torque converter (should have done the valve body first). I have since replaced the tranny and got the valve body upgrade and gone back to the stock converter... no issues any more.

I think this is the first I've heard of someone blowing their stock 5AT from a TC upgrade. Can you tell me what brand your TC upgrade was?

Also, how much power are you putting to the wheels with your FI setup?

Thanks.

It was an Edge Racing TC. The car is putting down 385rwhp.

The tranny was running a little hot so I installed a B&M tranny cooler. Then it was running a lot better. Put the 3500 TC on and progressively it got worse. Within a month it was dead.

Yeah, but what's the size of the cooler? Those circles are just the inlet/outlet to the cooler inside the radiator.
Coach, are you running an aftermarket radiator? Or is your tranny cooler an additional auxilary cooler?
