j train the question you should be asking is how much torque can my car hold. Im not sure if anyone has a definite answer but the best person you should ask is i think his screen name is fcon he has i believe a 500+ hp z with lots of torque.
I'm at 410 TQ and so far so good...I agree that it is TQ that killls your tranny, thats why I posted to watch your TQ numbers.
Ron...if I'm not mistaken its the TQ that causes heat issues.Do you have a tranny temp gauge?

so from what i gather reading the thread. the consesus is
400 ftlbs tq = max recommend power on stock trans
500 ftlbs tq = max recommend power on trans with valve body upgrade, torque converter and tranny cooler
500 ftlbs tq+ = built race trans
now ive seen where people have mentioned doing a swap to the th350 and th400 trans by gm. but has anybody ever put a sequential racing trans into a z before? if i ever got to the point where i would have to swap my 5at i think its something i would like to attempt.

Also, depending on the design of the torque converter, more aggressive stall speeds generate heat with higher pumping losses, which also reduces efficiency.

I believe the type of abuse will mainly determine the "acceptable" levels of HP and torque. Short 1/4 miles bursts may not raise temps enough for sustained damage and the tranny may last longer at higher levels of HP and TQ. More prolonged abuse such as from road course tracking etc. will tax the trans fluid much more.
After my motor was built, I was at 459whp on Sharif's dyno with about 450TQ. With only VB upgrade the trans would have some issues with TQ but ran well in short bursts from 0-100mph. Once I ran the twisties with a local exotic car group I boiled the fluid twice and put the trans in protective mode. Thereafter I upgraded the trans cooler and ran it hard at ZDayZ and did not have any issues. That trans today is running great in another car.

As far as the different valve bodies, I've heard a little more on why L10 isn't recommended. If you search around on VB's, you'll see responses to posts about looking into getting the L10 upgrades saying things like "Don't! They're crap!" with little further elaboration.
Someone posted pics of it up here, and was told the clutch packs pictured were no better than the original clutch packs in the tranny. Another guy who had a L10 kit said he didn't see anything extra in terms of clutches when they had to tear it down and rebuilt it

I was hoping for a long time that Osiris would be able to read the TCM temp sensors but that's still a no-go. So when I finally ended up building the car, I opted to install a trans temp sensor and hooking it up to an Innovate logging system.

That same person also said the L10 TC felt like a turd in daily driving (would lunge forward in weird moments in the lower rpm band) and he couldn't stand it and went with Edge Racing and was much more satisfied. Just FYI if/when any of you decide to upgrade, although it looks like general consensus here is good experience / feedback with the SGP products (which I'll probably go with soon).
