Okay, guys, has anyone gotten a twin turboed car to pass emssions in AZ or CA? (My car is up for renewal in January and I need to pass AZ emissions.)

What does (or did) it take to pass?

 

No after market turbo system for a Z will EVER pass CA emissions laws unless they are re-written.

Passing a mom-and-pop smog shop should be the least of your concerns. Find one that will look the other way for a little extra $$$.

Simple as that.

In AZ, the emissions testing faclities are state run, with state and/or contract employees. There are no "mom-and-pop" shops to shuffle a few $$$ to pass... That is not an option.

 

Do they plug into the OBD2 port like in DE? Here, they just plug into the port to see if there are any emission codes. no codes, you pass. they dont use the sniffer test like they used to here.

I thought Cali sucks. AZ is even worse when it comes to testing.

No, AZ is DEFINITELY not worse then CA. It is similar to DE like Bullitproof had mentioned for OBDII equiped vehicles. They plug in a scanner and if there are no codes, you pass. They don't put your car on the dyno or sniff the exhaust. This is why I love living here. If I have a 600whp twin turboed g that is not throwing any ecu codes, i'm clear .

I see. I was under the impression that they actually do a load-based emissions test. I learned something new today.

They do load-based emissions with exhaust sniffing for older vehicles that are not obdII equiped. This was a pain when I had my civic before. Luckily I was running nitrous so passing was not an issue

 

Easy way to fix,in maryland you still have to drive up and over the rollers for the old test or the new test..All they really do is plug in the tester and look for dtc,s,if none your good to go.But in my case they said my car was to low to go over the rollers sooooooo i got a 2 year free waiver pass.

 

in IL they just stopped even testing cars older that OBDII... no OVDII, no test even required. For OBDII cars they just check for codes... no codes and your done.

STS kit Has a CARB number right on the intake tubing

 

About $100 here in GA, luckly though the county i'm in now doesnt require one

 

The CARB # don't cover all vehicle, I think only 2 or 3 of them. At least that what is stated on their site.

 

To pass a california CARB inspection the vehicle must pass a VISUAL inspection. I know that my roadster even tho TT will pass the emissions testing but will not pass the visual. JWT is still trying to get CARB approval for their system and I was told by them that they still may get it for the 03 and 04 MY cars.

I've had quite a number of other modded car owners telling me not to worry and they can "hook me up" when it comes time for inspection. In the last 11K miles I've only had 3 CEL codes, all random misfire.

 

I've got an inspection coming up soon gotta figure out what to do.

 

I am not throwing any codes at the moment, though I have also had a few random misfire codes in the past (due to the JWT flywheel).

I know that JWT had been trying to get their TT kit to pass for a few years, but I thought they had given up (last that I had heard).

I have heard of several people here in AZ who simply had to pass the OBD2 test, with no visual test. However, I have a buddy with a 2001 Firebird Trans Am who had to do the rollers and a sniff test! This car is also OBD2 compliant, so I don't know why they made him jump through hoops (and his car is bone stock!).
