I have heard of several people here in AZ who simply had to pass the OBD2 test, with no visual test. However, I have a buddy with a 2001 Firebird Trans Am who had to do the rollers and a sniff test! This car is also OBD2 compliant, so I don't know why they made him jump through hoops (and his car is bone stock!).
I researched the emission test procedures in AZ. The standard for OBD2 vehicles is just a scan, but they can do a visual to check for emissions control devices, i.e. cats. So if you're not throwing codes you should be OK unless they get curious about your cats.

I get tested for the first time in Feb. so I'm going to throw my cats back on just to cover the bases.

As for your buddy's Firebird, I don't know how to explain that one.

I have an 03 model, but i don't think i am scheduled to get tested until 08 or 09 in CA. Is it different in AZ?

In the event you are throwing codes, can you go buy an Autozone to use their code readers and clear the codes yourself right before the smog appt?

How about NJ? I think if its OBD2 all they do is scan the car. I had my 2003 inspected but I was not watching what they did. I am pretty sure it is non rollers. Now for my 87 300zxt they put it on the rollers.

+1 on AZ just looking for ECU codes on modern cars.

lol at what the smog people would be thinking seeing/hearing a highly modified car pull in and pass with an ECU read.

Now when I'd go to pass my 78 vette, they did everything - checked for cats, popped the hood, sniffer test, etc etc...

well good luck...the code will probably come back pretty quick anyway.
I think I've heard the ECU can store some codes long term that the OBDII test looks for that simply erasing the short term code won't fix

If the codes doesn't come back before the test is over then you're clear. I used to have an Accord that always throws an emission related code, so I just reset the ecu before I drive to the smog check station, passed the OBDII scan without any issues.
