5At turbo Z, worth it?
I agree. A lot of people rag on Automatics in sports cars. I have had a manual Z and an auto Z. While stock the difference is noticeable, once you go FI, the Auto will likely have the advantage. Lots of the fast hot rods and pure dragsters use auto transmissions, that are tuned to never miss a shift. A human can never do that and can not shift as quickly as a good racing AT. I am in the process of going FI with an SGP 5AT. From what I have seen the shifting if amazing.
There is an irony in how the auto gets slagged for not being able to hold up over 450 whp. Granted a build is not cheap, it'll run you an easy $4.5 - 5k for a full build with torque converter, valve body and upgraded clutch packs, installed. But that should hold 600 whp and is a one time job if properly maintained. How many guys spend close to that going through multiple clutches trying to find the right one or burning them out? The GTM/Exedy twin disk clutch is almost $3k by itself.
When you put it all in perspective, a built transmission for the 5AT doesn't really seem all that exorbant compared to what the 6MT guys spend, and an upgraded clutch is a necessity.
