I guess I'll just buy bolt ons here and there and build my car up little by little. I think a good goal for me is 300 whp, but I know I'd prob have to do a lot of stuff just to get there (and almost costing me just as much for a turbo setup) But i had 300 awhp on a turbo WRX and it was more than enough for me (So 300 whp all motor should be pretty fun too!)
300 whp NA will cost you more than a turbonetics kit does

well, Im now leaning more towards just biting the bullet and just getting the whole turbonetics kit all at once. I spoke with doug over at Z fever in Tampa, fl (really really nice and educated guy!!!) he went over my options and I think I'm gonna be much more happy with a turbo. I'm just wondering what accessories I need to go with it (gauges, turbo timer, oil pan, etc) I'm looking into it heavily tho

If you are struggling to afford one of the most inexpensive FI kits on the market, you probably shouldn't be doing those kind of mods to your car in the first place.

I'd go with an electric supercharger and be done with it.

Ok, now this is what pisses me off about this site. Very knowledgeable people here but it seems as though SOME people have the "Go big or go home" attitude. I'm not saying I'm deciding whether to pay my mortgage or buy a turbo kit, but I've NEVER spent this much for ONE mod on a car... I've spent over $15K on my WRX, but over a span of about 2 years (which was still a lot in general). But damn dude, gimme a break. Some people don't have all that cash to lay down up front. So we just try to strategize and plan how we can get those mods that we dream about.... So just because I don't have $7000 sitting in my hand doesn't mean I can't be curious about trying to attain this someday

Do you think it would be more expensive to buy a whole car or buy it one piece at a time and put it together?

I'm sure you could do it, if a Turbonetics dealer didn't stop you from doing it first. But it doesn't make sense.

Oh, and what's with all the people in Tampa getting Turbonetics kits? I think I started a trend down here...

Yeah, good point. I guess it would be cheaper overall to get everything all at once....

I don't know of many people, yet, that have turbo Z's.... I only know two people that are on my car team, Team SSP, that have turbonetics kits. Other than that, I haven't even really seen ANY turbo Z's!!! But then again I've only had my Z for 3 months

You completely missed the point of the post...let me interpret it for you

This is not a WRX. This is obviously not a car that came turbo from the factory. To get into the FI game, even at the low end (which is the Turbonetics kit), will be roughly a $7000 investment. There is no way around this. It's not a go big or go home attitude, it's experience from people who have seen this done on this car for the last several years. No one is telling you "you suck" because you can't afford it - it's alot of money. But at the same time, if you can't afford it, or if the idea of dropping that kind of cash scares you, then FI'ing this car, or modding the car beyond simple simple bolt ons, will not be for you. It is not a cheap car to build, no matter what direction you decide to take. This isn't someone preaching to you from a mountain with an almighty gospel, it's owners of the same car you have, who have gone down the road of modding it, from "simple" FI kits (some people have had 2 and 3 different kits on there car), all telling you the same thing. You asked the question, you got the answers - but you can't criticize people because it's not the answer you wanted or were hoping for.

the problem is that people get so strung out paying for the turbo, what happens when something goes wrong, or something else happens in your personal life. people in general are very short sighted/ tunnel vision when it comes to buying things they want. I dont think people have teh "go big or o home attitude" more like "from your post you sound like you are on a shoestring budget and will be in some hurt if something happens to the motor"

The best advice i heard before going FI was, only do it if you have enough money saved to buy a new motor, or dont need that car as a DD.

Point taken fellas.... Thanks for the genuine insight... I'm just exploring ways that I can get to my debt counseling class faster, thats all.....

You guys are right... I was debating between staying NA and trying to go bigger and go FI, but the FI route is just outta reach for me right now. My main fear is that I'm going to spend almost $2k doing headers, HFCs, plennum and tune and not be happy with the results and end up wanting more..... When I could've spent that money towards FI. But like you guys also said, it seems that FI is going to cost over $7k... That does leave quite a skidmark in my tighty whities....

don't buy performance N/A Mods then.. do suspension, tires, brakes or stereo.. or even apperance mods..

you are looking for big performance and you are going to frustrate yourself buying simple N/A mods that don't yield big gains..

So you really want the turbo kit for bling show quality? No offense but the guys in SSP seem to be more about showing the car than pushing them to their limits. I personally would want something different than the other two people you go to shows with. You're only watering down your team's chance to win trophies by having the exact same setup as the others. Be different.

I agree with the above comment. If you want to do something a peice at a time, go with mods for looks. A well done NA Z is more likely to win a car show than one with just a turbo kit on it.

No no, not at all... If anything I'm more interested in mods that will make my car more fun to drive. I used to be all about the "bling" but then the car became too much of a liability, since it drew so much attention. It was broken into and the DVD/Navi unit was taken in broad daylight. And the bodykit couldn't go over ANYTHING since it literally sat 3" off the ground... It just wasn't a practicall DD at all! here's a link of the car from the website (before even MORE mods done to it, like Axis widetrack wheels, CF strut bar, more):

http://www.teamssp.com/christian.php

I really don't compete in shows anymore, but I'm still friends with people on the team. My new goals are mainly just to have a nice looking car (nothing too fancy) with good power to enjoy, which in my mind would be wheels and a turbo..... I'm not trying to get a turbonetics kit for show at all, it just seems to be something that most Z folks have and seems to be a pretty well-known route to go for power.

Chris, give me a PM, you should swing by and I'll show you my set-up, give pointers and a general direction of which way to go with your car.

In all honesty, you could pick up a used kit for around $3500 and we can find someone to install it

Say you throw down enough for a turbonetics, or any FI for that matter.

What happens when something goes wrong? The chances are slim of a motor blowing at what? 350whp? But it can still happen. What then? You will need 8-9k for a built motor. You could barely afford the turbo.

FI is NOT for you bro...unless you go with ^^

FI doesn't even seem worth it with this car. I thought about it when I thought I could piece together my own kit, but it doesn't seem possible with this car, or at least doing it for cheaper. 5-7k for 350-400 whp doesn't seem worth it. If it was 2.5-3k for that much, yeah ok, but not more than that. At least not when you think that an integra GSR with a 2-2.5K turbo system could make around 300-325 reliably and be close to dead even with a Z as far as power/wieght ratio, and that if the person is mechanicly inclined, at least enough to pull, and drop in a I4 motor, could buy rods and pistons and have them put together for them for around 1500-1600 dollars, and have a motor capable of 450 whp. Anyway, the Z is just gonna be my nice looking Daily Driver, and the Integra is what I'm gonna build for speed. Just my opinion, Ramsey.
