Default Turbonetics: Buy piece by piece or ALL at once?

Ok,
So I'm having a moral dilema as to whether I should just save up for a LONG time to buy a turbo kit, or should I buy the kit piece by piece? I'm wondering if it would save me $ to just buy the parts used piece by piece (intercooler, turbo, injectors, etc). Would I save $ buy slowly buying it?? I REALLY wanna go FI, but its SOOOOOOO freakin expensive!!! It really bums me out that I cant get my hands on it cuz its just a ridiculous amount of cash to throw down all at once... Even if I saved up for it, $5K just for a kit is so much more than what I'm used to spending for parts... What do you guys think?

(I know, I know... You gotta pay to play... Welcome to the big leagues... If you can't afford it then don't get it... blah blah )

Neither. Do it right the first time and save up for this.

You summed it up there. Stick to your own advice.

Here's the deal with boosting a car, if you plan on spending 3K plan on having at least 5K if you plan on spending 5K make sure you have 8K

it ALWAYS cost more then you think it will.

chit, I wanted to spend 5K on a turbo setup for my civic... $14,500 later.....

things add up fast and if something goes wrong it can take a big bite out of your wallet.

With my experience don't do it at all unless you can afford a twin kit and afford to build your motor when the other one poops out a rod.

P.S. You can't piece togather a Turbonetics kit.

I'd wait until you had enough money for the whole kit AND MORE. Don't forget about repairs as many things can go wrong once you go FI. FI repairs can get costly very quick. A turbo kit doesn't do any good on a broken engine.

he could do that, but if money is tight, he could buy it 1/2 a piece at a time; I'd probably try to buy half an intercooler or 1/2 the turbo right away

Just wait. Something better could come out while you are buying single parts, then you would have bought things you didn't want anymore and have to take a loss when selling them.

how would you even go about piecing it together? Buying used parts of who knows what condition?

Save money? Assuming you buy new, you'll spend way more for components than you would for the kit

As far as the overall cost, yes it's alot of money. But if $5k makes you think twice, forced induction is definitely not for you. $5k doesn't even get you in the door, all it basically does is get you the kit. What about all the other ancillaries you'll need? And install costs? You're looking at an easy $7k pricetag, and that's just to get the kit in the car and running...no clutch upgrade, no rainy day money for when the motor decides it wants to see daylight, etc.

Good input guys... I guess I've met my match for the meanwhile. I guess this is just outta my league and its kinda a slug to my ego. I've always had cars that I could mod and make faster, but the Z is something I can't afford to do, atleast right now... I guess I'll just buy bolt ons here and there and build my car up little by little. I think a good goal for me is 300 whp, but I know I'd prob have to do a lot of stuff just to get there (and almost costing me just as much for a turbo setup) But i had 300 awhp on a turbo WRX and it was more than enough for me (So 300 whp all motor should be pretty fun too!)

I'm sure Z1 would tell you it is cheaper to bolt a turbo kit onto the stock motor than it is to accomplish 300whp NA. Check out the link in his sig to his build thread to see what is involved.

Just save up for the PowerLab kit single turbo kit (way better than the Turbonetics) or get a decent twin kit like the Greddy if you prefer twins. A turbo kit on the stock block with low boost (5 - 8 PSI) will give you about 350 - 400whp.

If you have the itch and must do some mods now, I suggest you spend $$$ on suspension mods until you can afford to go FI.

Just my .
