Default ..... my conversation with slowboy racing

So I called slowboy racing to ask them what kind of tuning options they offered for the nissan 350z. Unfortunately I was looking for an ecu reflash to avoid going with a piggy back or standalone and they do not offer it.

So when I spoke with him he recommended a utec or a basic AFC. He said the utec he could get me for $700 and the basic AFC for $350. Obviously I would favor the utec because of numerous reasons, one being timing control.

When I mentioned controlling the timing after boosting a 350z this was my reply.

"Oh we don't even mess with the timing on boosted 350z's, they are pretty good stock. Just a basic AFC and tune to add a little gas in the top end would be fine"

Ok well that makes perfectly good sense.... () I said Ok thank you and hung up.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't timing a HUGE issue between NA and FI cars? I mean, I know my subaru ran something in the low 20's max, while I've seen NA cars with upwards of 40 degrees.

Also, when the AFC controls fueling it sends bogus maf readings to the ECU to either richen or lean out the system, doesnt load directly effect timing......?

Seriously, maybe I just have some wrong information on timing and fuel but what the guy said was about the most stupid thing I've heard in a while.

maybe instead of "slowboy racing" it should be "expensive hole in the block racing"!

Good for you! This was one of the main problem with the Emanage and that is why Greddy used to blow engine left and right. This show you that the shop don't know how to tune our car or lack of experience.

How far are you from MRC? That is only a few hours drive..

True. And yeah, there were a lot of early Procharger and Greddy TT installations with blown motors due to EMS or tuners that didn't touch timing. From what I gather, a rather conservative timing map should be around 14 deg at redline. (could be wrong)

This might be a good discussion if some more experienced tuners want to give any info.

overZealous1 lol believe me they have an absolutely horrible horrible reputation in the Subaru world (where I come from), I would never actually THINK about getting a tune there but I was curious what they offered *just in case*.

Yes I agree please any experienced tuners chime in with this.

AthenG I'm in the pittsburgh area, how far is that drive?

+1 and around 11-13 around Peak TQ assuming you are running 93 octane and stock block.
