About 700RWHP is about it for that tranny. The clutch packs are smaller in diameter then say a turbo 400.So that is really the big limitation.

How much power can the OEM 6MT clutch hold for a good while before it starts slipping? I was hoping for ~ 400whp. Also, when they drop the engine to do a turbo install, I assume its cheaper to swap out clutches/flywheel combo as well.

We have been messing with these cars and their auto trannies for 5 years. If you do the VB, TC and a cooler WHEN YOU FIRST BOOST the car, you can get up to 500-550rwhp. If you don't prep the tranny first, you will have to do a full build as you put a lot of wear on the clutches.

We offer a sub-one week turnaround on VB and tranny builds beacuse we usually have all of the parts in stock ready to go!

Give us a call if you have more questions!

Am I correct in thinking the torque converter is only to improve launching or is this also a necessity to prolong tranny life if your goal is "only" 400whp. I understand the need for the VB upgrade and cooler, anyone can respond btw

GTM makes a great valve body. I have had mine for about 3 months and it is working great.

SGP also makes a great valve body that many customers are happy with.

Level 10 makes one too, but stay away from them. I had my previous Level 10 'upgraded' valve body taken apart and analyzed, and the work they did to it was a joke.

Here is my fully built SGP Racing 5AT. I don't have it back yet, since I'm waiting for the fully built longblock to be completed, but SGP sent me these pictures from their shop.

Whats the price range to do a VB, TC, and cooler (what?) for the 5AT? I only ask since seems like everyone else got PM'd.

Recommended brands?

You can get the Pro Torque converter directly from them, its a little bit cheeper than buying from a shop.

I paid about $50 for my in line B&M cooler pn 70268 11"X 7 1/2" X 3/4". Its not the largest cooler out their but used in line with the factory cooler it shoud be okay for a daily driver that will see ocassional drag strip visits. If I were going to road race Ic have gotten a much bigger cooler.

I also bought the B&M external filter pn 80277 assembly for $30 since our AT has no real filter.

I am also running Redline D4 ATF which meets J specs. Its a little bit less expensive than the J from the dealer. I have no proof but care to beleive that Redline D4 has to be a better fluid for a street strip 5AT set up than OEM J fluid.

We'll se how it all holds up this summer after I tune and shake down my new set up! JOY

A full tranny rebuild with high performance clutch packs (not really forged internals) will run around $3k (exclusive of the VB and TC) - most of that cost is labor.
