Default SGP Built Trans Review

Alright guys, after getting all the stupid crank sensor issues settled, I've been able to mess around with the car and see how the new trans handles the power and shifts.

First and foremost, the stall. I believe the stall is set to 2,800. The other night, I went to a remote location and launched the car a few times. On stock tires, when I launched, I literally sat in one spot spinning the tires. I was like and then This is going to take some getting used to when launching the car and hopefully the new tires can take the abuse.

Secondly, the shifts. OMFG this trans shifts like a beast. Daily driving, with about 25% throttle, the shifts are nice and smooth, although downshifting to a stop can be a bit clanky some times It doesn't always happen, but every now and then it does and it's kind of annoying. When giving decent amount of power, it bangs into gear so hard it jerks my foot off the gas pedal sometimes That's when I get traction though. On the highway on my way home from the shop, I spun the tires going into 4th gear. No, I did not just chirp them, they spun at 9psi (traction control off of course). Although, I must say traction control at this point is pretty much useless. I went WOT in 2nd gear and spun the tires going into 3rd with traction control off. I could feel it trying to work, the slip light frantically blinking, but it just couldn't handle it

Downshifting has also greatly improved. I can drop two gears with two simple flicks of the wrist when in MM. It will downshift as fast as I can move the shifter. Before, I had to downshift, wait, and downshift again. Now, it's pretty much instant. If I do it just right, it'll drop to second and skip third, but I've only been able to do that a couple of times.

In auto mode, it's a bit more tame, but still pretty aggressive. I've gone WOT in auto mode and it had no issues shifting right at red line, every time.

So, overall, I am very pleased. The only thing I really don't like is the clunkiness of the trans. It clinks and clanks sometimes, but it's not too bad. I've gotten used to it, but I've had friends in the car give me the WTF look. After we figured out the crank sensor issue (thanks Nissan for the broken sensor!), everything is all good. I'm keeping an eye on the fluid level and still breaking it in. I've only been running 9psi for now. Soon, I'll do a review at 550whp and see how it holds up

Thanks for reading

My friend just had his done from them. Huge difference in acceleration and much more firm shifts. A must have for auto

id like to see a video of it in action! Then you could show us exactly how much quicker the response time is in manual mode.

Did you make the choice of the stall @ 2800? The reason I ask is because the oem stall is per Nissan specs 2650-2900. If they installed a new tq converter, I thought the stall was usually @ 3200.
BTW, congrats on finally getting to enjoy the car

Yeah, I spoke to Thomas and I wanted the car to be as streetable as possible. He suggested that unless this is a drag car, a 3200 stall is unnecessary. I'm pretty happy with the decision.

Nice review and glad it all worked out. Time for some better tires!

On D mode, didn't you have trouble hitting the rev limiter when spinning tires in 1st gear? 9 psi is wastegate springs for the 700bb, and on PS2 summer tires, it's way too much power for 1st gear.
I wish there was a way to launch from 2nd gear.

Come down to ZdayZ and let's do a comparative review.

Yeah, at first I did, but I quickly realized I need to modulate the throttle. If I launch all out, I'll just sit in one spot spinning tires. I can't even get moving unless I only give about 75% throttle. Once it hooks it's a little tricky, but after a few tries I got the hang of it and am able to keep traction, but the hard shifts break the tires loose again . It's def something I'm going to need to work on. Hell, I can spin the OEM tires in 3rd gear on the highway at 65mph

I'm just glad I can finally go all out with the car and not have to worry about my trans breaking like before As soon as my wheels get here, I'm going to turn up the boost and see how it does at ~550whp cause I know I won't even get traction with the crappy OEM tires and I'm still breaking in the trans. It actually does get better and better as the days go by.

Hopefully I can still make it down for ZdayZ. Gotta show the 6MT's we can play too

Come down to join the Top Dawg event on Thu at 2 pm. See that thread for details, but sign up this week if you can - or at least put yourself tentatively on that list. It would be awesome to have another built 5AT there.

Do you know what numbers your pushing at this time. The reason why I ask is that you may need the level 3 axle as your next upgrade.....I am saving now but damn it's expensive.

Dont change your axles till you break them. 700hp on my stockers , adn these axles have about 80 or so 1/4 passes on them.

Congrats on the trans rebuild. It is def a much more aggressive feeling trans; shifts are hard and fast. I know exactly what you mean about lurching forward and the gas pedal..............does it to me every time.

Luie is 100% right. If you look at the experience on the forums, the stock axles do break, but it takes time at high hp levels. Replacing with another stock axle is relatively cheap. If you get a stronger axle, what's the next weakest link in the chain - and do you really want that to break? Level 2 and Level 5 axles have broken also and they are expensive. Metal fatigue is cumulative and nothing lasts forever. It's a simple cost over time equation you need to figure out.

Awesome! Can you give us some detail on your technique? Nitrous out the hole? Do you disconnect the brake pedal signal to the ECU so the throttle wont close when you lean on the stall? What RPM do you stall up to? etc...
