I have an alternate plan that should make the positioning of the mounts alot more stable. Now I have to order some new mounts...

LOL calm down guys, unfortunately I am at a stand still, I am waiting on a set of motor mounts before I can continue. I am itching to do more work, but I really cant do much till these damn mounts get here from Japan....Which is fine, I need to finish remodeling the office area of the shop anyway.

that movie has to be ranked at the top of the list for quotable movies, too bad its in the comedy section of my DVDs haha. Ok I'm not gonna start trolling this thread, I'm sure there is a thread dedicated to how bad the fast and the furious is.

Default Meanwhile, back at the VQ lab....

So I convinced my buddy to buy an S14 for his next project car, he is a fellow Sentra/NX2000 builder. He found this beauty that was begging for a swap:

So it was time to find a suitable motor for this swap...Uh oh what is this?

800lbs of swapping goodness...

Lets see what we got here, any of you know what this bad boy is?:

Well you should since its a descendent of the motor you all have in your car. Its a VQ30DET out of a Nissan Cedric in Japan. Its a single turbo VQ. They came strictly with an automatic trans. This motor can be found here in America non turbo and in a fwd variation in the Nissan Maxima and the Infiniti I30. Both motors can be used in RWD form. Both the VQ35 and the VQ30 blocks and heads are damn near identical, except obviously the internals are different and the VQ35 has the variable timing. The VQ30 has 9:1 compression, piston squirting oil intercoolers etc... This swap has not been done very often due to there hasnt been a manual trans that is available that would bolt right up to the motor till the G35 and 350z hit the market. So what we have is a VQ30DET and a G35 6 spd trans combo that will be put into this car.

So here is the reason why I have not made any more progress on my ride. We decided to see if the turbo setup off the VQ30DET will bolt up to the VQ35DE and fit in the 240sx. Which would be sweet because it will be a cheaper alternative to an aftermarket single turbo kit.

Here are some pics of the dismantle of the turbo setup:
My buddy Ameen (the owner of the engine and the S14) at work:

Close up shot of the turbo side of the motor with the heat shields on.

With the heat shields off:

Close up shot of how the cross pipe is ran, IIRC its similar to the powerlab setup:

Size: 87.0 KB

The whole turbo setup removed, this whole setup is being taken to my shop for trial and error fitment:

From what we have read and have seen the turbo is a Nissan made turbo and is very close to, if not the same as the RB25DET stock turbo. It's basically a T3 compressor housing, Ameen believes they applied some of garrett's tech, and used a ceramic turbine with a T3 flange as well. He has heard it has flow characteristics of a Super-60. He had a turbo like this before and sold it last year for cheap. Its alright for stock boost but they suck at boost levels higher than 15lbs, the ceramic blades shatter.

Compared to a stock GTI-R SR20DET T28 turbo:

The motor as it sits turbo-less. It looks almost like a stock VQ35DE...

Size: 113.2 KB
Name: 240sxBuild051.jpg

So now its off to the shop for some test fitting of the VQ30DET setup on a VQ35DE, this might be a cheaper alternative for those of you looking to go FI (Oh yeah that is metal valve covers you see on that VQ30 instead of those gay plastic ones.....)

That'd be two Osiris systems! haha

Looks good, and it's good to see someone willing to educate themselves along the way. Hopefully someone on here will get you to make some EDU threads about all this turbo stuff.

VQ30 FTW. Especially the DET...

FWIW though the M30 had a VG30, the only VQ30DE released in the states was the FWD block in the A32 Maxima (95-99) and I30 (96-99). Also just like the VQ35, the FWD and RWD blocks are cast differently, so it could be used, but a FWD block in a RWD configuration would present all sorts of problems when trying to use aftermarket turbo manifolds or headers due to the placement of the motor mounts.

Ever think about going with an off the shelf VQ35 TT kit for it, or are you going to use a stock style single setup in his car?

Ohh your right, I stand corrected on the M30. I have seen Maxima owners swap the VQ30DET into their vehicles, this guy also used a FWD maxima VQ30 in his S13: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/767108/2 and I have heard of a guy using a FWD VQ35 in his S13 as well.

As far as an off the shelf twin turbo kit, it really is not an option for me because:
1. Me as a true DIY guy the turbo kits available are over priced.
2. I will most likely have to cut up whatever kit I use to make it work in my application, and for those prices I cant bring myself to do it.
3. For those prices I can put together a overall better turbo kit than most can offer for way cheaper.
4. I want to make big numbers and most switch to single when trying to do so.

Everything right now is trial and error. I am doing this for experimental purposes. Just trying to find the best method to putting such a big *** puzzle together.

I also wanted to put this information out there for those guys who might have blown their current DE or boosted DE and want to put this in their 350z/G35 as a cheaper stock motor that is more suitable for turbo. I have heard that the VQ30 crank and rods are an upgrade for the internals of a VQ35. You could even do a frankenstien version and combine VQ35 heads with VQ30 bottom end. I have searched and there doesnt seem to be much info on this motor on this forum or any other forum or website for that matter.
