ok i have a few questions on the aps st kit...i just bought the kit about 2 months ago (while on deployment) and i get home sometime in dec...im going to start doing the install shortly after, but i wana make sure i get EVERYthing right...i cant risk a blown motor...

so my questions are:

-should i upgrade to a U-TEC? or will the unichip be fine for running 9lbs (at or right under 400hp)
-i work at an exhaust shop and we were going to build my NISMO exhaust and turbo XS test pipes to fit it...will that provide the proper exhaust flow for it??? or should i go bigger?
-who is a good tuner in the seattle/ tacoma area?
-i read in a few posts that i will have to change out some turbo parts soon after i buy it and upgrade...is this true?
- and finally, i want this motor to be safe...will a tune be enough or should i look into replacing a few internals?? i hear our rods arnt to strong on the VQ (if so..what would you recommend replacing, and with what?)

i know some of these questions might be dumb but i am a noob in the fi world...i had a STI b4 the z but never really did much to the turbo...and iv been searching around alot latly and cant find many answers...i get mixed answers

Not worth the extra money for the utec. The unichip will be more than capable

take another look at the exhaust setup. You will not be able to use any test pipes in the setup... modified or not. The nismo should flow adequately, but I would still recommend the APS single exhaust

-who is a good tuner in the seattle/ tacoma area?
According to the APS site, drift office is your closest dealer. I would contact them first if local is of concern

-i read in a few posts that i will have to change out some turbo parts soon after i buy it and upgrade...is this true?
Not aware of this... do you have more specific details?

You don't just 'replace a few internals'. You would be looking at a full rebuild. If that is the case, you will want to be looking into a twin setup of some sort. Your motor should be fine for the most part with a proper tune

keep researching... you have more to learn about the setup

Well its hard to just imagine what you're talking about- I ordered a ST kit, but haven't seen one installed yet so I can't really see all the clearances you're talking about. (couldn't find many pictures of the intake piping installed)

Your last statement makes more sense though. I can definitely see there being interference issues with aftermarket headers + TN/Powerlab exhaust downpipes, but I didn't know the intake piping on the APS ST got that close to the exhaust headers.... that's not a good thing, if it does get close..

I think it is safe to assume all new kits are shipping with the updated electronic check valve.

Maybe it's just me, but before ordering any kit, I had checked all the manufacture's sites. I read through the install instructions and looked at the component lists to know exactly what I was getting. Check APS' site and look through the install instructions and check out all the pics they have, you will have a much better understanding of the setup

edit:

Please reference the install diagrams on this page

Please reference the component list -> you will notice APS part # 000-094-100 "SOLENOID - OIL CONTROL" that looks like this:

^ if your check valve doesn't look like that, you will want to get that one prior to installing... but like I said, it is safe to assume that all new kits will be shipping with this solenoid

and just a fun little bit of info:

thank you for all the help tho! its greatly appriciated

i have a question regarding the unichip that comes with the ST kit. its pretuned ..

but i am in a place were the temp is much like a desert. 45 degree on avarage ans sometimes reach the 50mark...

petrol i am using is 98 octane... i believe the tune is done on 91.... ( correct me if am wrong )

i was not planning to keep the kit as it is out of the box till i get used to the power then tune it for more power.. so would the unichip given in the kit is enough.. or i have to retune it ???

keep in mind i am not after power. am after reliability and more secure tune.

OK, driving in the rain will be fine

It's not a big deal, just don't take the car extreme off-roading, you'll be fine with where the turbo is positioned.

OK so ive had the kit on my car for almost two years and put maybe 5K on it.
I can tell you this, my kit was older, so i needed the check valve. Currently I made a custom downpipe with a tial 44mm gate because the stock APS setup overboosts. And as for the Uni Chip its garbage. NO ONE tunes it, and i think you have to remove it each time to load a map... Mine is for sale if anyone wants it. I have a Utec and I like it, not perfect, but much safer and more capable I think. Theres also a oil blow by issue sometimes because of the turbo being so low but im putting on a Force Performance inline oil filter to hopefully aid that issue. As for upgrades, I heard none of the TT setups broke 1000hp, I could be wrong. Intense power has a powerlab kit modded and it made 900+hp... my OPINION is that the aps kit should kit in the 600hp range maxed out, as for upgrades, Im more then sure you could stuff a larger turbo under there if your willing to cut up your Z a bit. things likt the frame rail and the K member. All in all I stumbled into my kit for 4K shipped and so far it works brilliantly makin 371hp and 380ftlbs on a DD.... AT 6-7PSI (aps wg sucks)! I also have their exhaust... Like I mentioned before these are my opinions... Im sure they'll **** someone off... but I wouldnt bother with the TT setups... most of them max out close to 600hp too I THINK... APS Extreme is prolly the best one... but I intend to hit 900hp on my APS ST, im sure they'll be cutting and welding, but thats the fun of it! APS FTW.

900 hp that remains to be seen from this kit. The best so far is approximately 500 rwhp.
