Default Cracked manifold ****Updated with PICS****

Okay so I might get flammed for asking this, but I'd like to know. I just found a crack in my passenger manifold. Sux, but I've found a new one and will be getting it fri. I don't drive the car much anyway, but my buddy told me if I drove it I could suck in cold air and drop a valve!?! That sounds totally ridiculous to me, but I'm no pro so I thought I'd ask. I most likely will not drive the car, but in case I decide I want to.

Technically, if you had a massive crack or leak, you could introduce air and burn up a valve. In practice, I have never seen this. I was once racing with a turbocharger that was only held by 1 nut, and the turbo was literally hanging off...massive exhaust leak. No damage to the engine at all, and I must have done about 10 laps like that.

Suck in air through an exhaust manifold????

Not likely on earth with the engine running.

It just functions as an exhaust leak. If you have a new manifold coming its not a big issue. Just try to stay out of boost till you get the new manifold on as there is a lot of heat there. (If you were just going to have that mani welded you wouldn't want to drive as the temps, and temp changes would weaken it quite a bit.

Started the disasembly to replace the manifold. Won't have to pull the motor, but am gonna have to lift it slightly so I can remove the pass engine mount to get the turbo/manifold out. DAMN I'm tired!

What my car looks like right now.

Cracked Manifold. You can see the crack just before the last cylinder.

Front end parts.

More front end parts.

The rest of the front end.

And me just before I came in the house.

unfortunately that seems to be typical of the Greddy kit, I found mine cracked when I did the engine swap and I know someone that had both cracked

For your viewing pleasure......

Guessing the missing chunk blew out of the manifold, thank god. Turbo still looks great! No shaft play and .006 clearance on the blades.

what are you going to do about the manifold? have it welded? what's the best wedling process for fixing this kind of crack? TIG welding?

gsxr,

where did you get a new one? I have always heard heard that greddy is really hard to get replacements from.

I just installed a new greddy kit on my Z back in June. Is this something I should worry about? Or is this something with older kits?

Wished that I would have had you check that, while you had my rehab project going on?
