I was thinking about doing a custom, twin turbo setup on my 2003 350z. I have (2) TD04 turbos lying around, (from 2 WRX's) and I figure i would put them to use. I was thinking, since I dont feel like spending $7000 on a new kit, I could put this one together for a little cheaper (also a lot weaker). I was thinking of buying aftermaket headers, then cutting them and welding up the turbo flange adapters. Then running them to a 2 in 1 out intercooler, with a single 3" to the plenium. Then buying a piggyback, widband, etc for tuning. And all the little misscelanous stuff I dont feel like listing. I haven't seen anyone really attempt this before on the Z, If you have tried it, know someone who has, or have any input, let me know. Anything you have to say, GOOD or BAD, let me know what you think.

I figure if i get the high output used kits, I would have to swap out my stock internals, but if I run two TD04's i think my stock internals could handle it. Maybe im wrong, but that would put me in a whole new price range.
"weaker"-
most of the commerically available kits have been proven. your kit, is not.. sure. you might save a grand or two by piecing everything together, but poor tuning and taking 'aftermarket headers and adpating it to work' might cost you more in the end.
good luck. report back to us after you do it.
if you can do your own fab work,go for it.if this is your first time and think you are going to save money AND learn.......you need to slowly step away from the turbos.

I would say to sell your turbos on a wrx forum and use the money toward buying a used kit of some type. Less hastle, proven results and support from other members that can help you trouble shoot if problems come up. Unless you are really looking for a project, I don't think you need to start this one.

Thanks for all of the replies so far guys.
I can do the fabrication work by myself, which really is not a big issue. Its more on the tuning side that im debating. A friend of mine is good with tuning, and turbo setups all together. I have looked at other car forums and people custom make turbo systems all of the time for other cars. And I was wondering why its not common for 350z users? What makes it so much more difficult on a 350z, then any other car ive seen?

^^^^^How many people here have blown stuff up after spending thousands on a kit that was made by a "brand name company" Screw what up? It's all in the tuning.
OP:
Do it. I don't know why people on here doubt anybody that is willing to do some work themselves. I find that many (not all so don't flip out) Z owners are afraid of getting their hands dirty. Lets's not forget that it is all just piping, and redirecting gas flow. As for price, you will save a crap load over buying a new kit. Yes you have to select a proper turbo but what else is there really, just pipes.
I myself will be starting my own ST build, and all the fabrication/welding will be done by me. With a brand new Garret turbo, new UTEC and tuner, new tial W/G, stainless steel exhaust, 28x8x3.5 FMIC, 400cc injectors, new Walbro 255, ect .... ect... I will spend about $3000. A new Turbonetics kit is about $5000 and that's with a reflash, so you can't change anything.
So don't get dicouraged by some people here, jut go and do it. Good luck.

dude...if you can weld...have all the materials around you..and have read up and did all the research, then do it. dont listen to anyone whos saying you cant do it because if people like hal or sharif listened to the naysayers, then they wouldnt be where they are right now.
know the limits of your current setup, just make suuuuureeee you know what you are doing, make suuuureeee you have crucial parts that are known to never falter, and most importantly make sure you have good engine managent with a superior tune.
and also brace places that would obviously crack under extreme pressure and vibration

I say do it and even do it on your stock exhaust STS style. and run 2' piping to the FMIC and then a 3" to yout intake manifold. there isnt much space on the headers. but you can def. fab up a test pipe from the stock headers and make it work. plus it would be easier to access in the future. most TT kits require you to pull the motor to work on them.
I wish people would make these posts after they finish.. not before..
too many fcking dreamers on this board.. i wish i could fcking build a teleporting machine that would make me teleport from my living room to my desk at work.. but mark my words.. i won't make a post about it till i am finished
No Offence to you OP.. but quite frankly i am sick of these types of threads.. don't talk about it.. be about it
