Default How do you take the engine out with the tranny still mounted?

This is the second time I have had to take the engine out of my car and I am getting pretty efficient at doing it. Last yeah I took the whole engine and transmission out of the front with the K member still on.

Lately I have been seeing a few threads where the tranny is still mounted to the chassis and the engine is out. I figured that it would be difficult to do this because of the amount of lift to get the engine mounts out of the holes would make it hard for the input shaft to slide out.

anyone got any tips?

here is a pic for reference (sorry to hijack the pic)

You don't. I have done this the first time I pulled my engine. After removing the whole thing the second, third, and fourth time I would never try to do it the other way again. It was the biggest PITA to do first time round and I actually broke the upper oil pan on that engine doing it. Remove the whole thing and thank me later. It's simple:

1. remove driveshaft - 2 minutes
2. remove shifter stuff inside car - 10 minutes
3. remove tranny supports and use a tranny jack with wheels to hold it in place
4. pull the whole ***** forward and slightly up. You'll need to watch the steering lines on the axle, break them and it'll be a ***** to replace.

i dont imagine the process of lining up the input shaft and motor mounts at the same time would be a good time... but i never tried it this way.

removing the engine only is great for some vehicles, like subarus, for the Z the trans is so easy to unhook from the chassis i can't think of any reason to ever try and leave it in. One trick i will give you if you are doing this w/ out a lift, is to jack the back of the car up higher than the front when you go to do the actual engine removal. This will give the trans more room to come out level to the ground.

its all about chaining the cherry picker in the right angle. leave the tranny attached, four more bolts and a shifter with a lot less headaches.

I helped Chris at SP pull my motor. They made a trick little cart that the engine and trans sit in perfectly (larry has madd measuring and welding skills). Engine/trans come out the bottom as a unit attached to the subframe. They are pretty proficient at it now. Took chris and I about 3 hours (with us bs'ing A LOT, and not having access to his toolbox, blocked by a viper hood, so had to find tools in other boxes).

can see cart here when we pulled my motor

like i said if your working on the ground just jack the back up higher than the front when you are ready to pull the engine. It will give you the room for the transmission to clear. The other nice thing to have is a load leveler. You can get a cheap one at harbor freight. Not the best quality, but for a once and a while tool, it should last quite a while. That will allow you to get the angles needed to clear everything w/ ease.

what do most of you do with the wiring harness?

do you:

a) disconnect it from the ecu and lay it on top of the motor while pulling the motor out

or

b) disconnect the harness from the motor/trans and leave it in the car?

depends on how much the engine is taken apart when i pull it. if the upper and lower intakes are already off, ill usually just take the harness off the engine and lay it aside... but if everything is still assembled its really easy to just pull the harness into the bay - i just dont like to upset all my FCON wiring since its rather tight down there.

I pull the whole harness out into the engine bay. just make a note not to hardwire anything and run it through the grommet where the harness comes into the car. my widebands were wired in that way and I ended up having to cut some stuff

Blackbird, you should do a DIY of the engine pull so people who hasn't done it before have some idea how to do it right. Just a thought.

It sounds overly simple but:

decide if you are removing trans before engine or together as a unit.

remove anything that is touching the engine and firewall/fenders/front clip be-it plastsic, metal, wire, or rubber

Then attack supporting engine/engine and trans and remove.

lol

I know its sounds crazy but thats really all there is to it......several hours of work and viola.
