Default Dilema. to overbore or not overbore.

well as the topic says, my question is pretty basic. i have a shortblock in great condition already inspected and cleaned. The clearances turned out to be within specs of nissan. i have all of the basic components already (eagle rods, cp pistons, bearings, l19s) pretty much a shortblock setup already done.so now my question is.
A)keep as is do not overbore if all is fine and dandy?
b)overbore to .02 ?
this is going to be for a basic 500-550whp setup.
right now im running turbonetics on my 06 revup, looking to upgrade to powerlab once the funds are back.

been on the forums for a decent ammount of time n couldnt find my answers with the search button!

If the CP pistons are already bought, then you're kind of stuck aren't you?

Nothing "Basic" about 550whp - seems like a toss-up, you spend the money now and wonder if you really needed it, or you save the money and then kick yourself when you spend more in the future if the rings have blowby. Of course it could be fine either way as well too, hence the gamble.

The main reason for going overbore, particularly with a clean block, is to allow the machinest to properly set the piston to wall clearance. Otherwise, it's a crapshoot, and you are likely to have more or less P2W clearance than recommended.

In some cases (not your case), the cylinder wall is damaged, making .020 or .040 overbore a requirement.

guys thanks for the replies. yes the pistons are in the mail. therefore i can reasily return them. what i ment for a basic build is that the car is going with basic components and i dont want to "overbuild" for power that i want. i dont want a dyno queen and my car doesnt see an immense ammount of abuse. my car has been running about 7.3psi for a little over a year. is there anyone with stock bore on the forums that is able to chime in ?? that would be very helpfull.

guys thanks for the replies and not flaming, this thread might help someone in the future. special thanks to rrmedicx in helping me !!!

I have stock bore but that was becuase I had clean walls from the Darton sleeves

As Sharif said the wall clearances might be an issue, but you might be lucky, you wont know until the machine shop measures the pistons and cylinder walls to see what kind of clearance you will have.

You wont get to 550whp on the TN kit without headwork so invest more.

im planning on getting near or at the 500whp mark with the kit. powerlab gt35/37 is in the future along with a haltech. so has anyone done stock bore? my car right now is currently at turbotrix and they have a good machine shop. but these are the same guys that told me my bores are good for stock bore pistons. http://www.turbotrix.com/wordpress/?page_id=21

^^ I think the Intensepower G35 has a stock bore block w/ pistons and rods. They made 906whp, and the car still runs perfect to this day; even after all the 1/4 mile runs...

I'm in the same boat as you right now. I have a set of stock bore Arias Pistons sitting in my house and the bores on my block are like new. I am sending it to Sound Performance this week hopefully and will see what they say. Arias will swap the pistons out for .020 OB for free for me so the worst case is I have to wait two weeks for shipping and recieving.

I would personally do the .020 over just so the shop can set the proper tolerances across the board. Especially in a used block, you do not want to kick yourself later.

It has always been my preference to bore / hone a block to the specs for the new pistons. Especially when going to an aftermarket forged piston like a CP, Arias, Wiseco, etc. Generally the piston to wall clearances and ring end gap specs are different from those on a stock piston.

THIS IS INTERESTING NEWS TO ME. i am considering coughin out the extra cash for the boring. any more input on this subject?
i was also advised that even the stock nissan bearings are good enough for a built motor. i think we need to make a thread where motors/motor building is broken down.

lol.. rookie didnt read the entire comment thats all. but as for the overboring c.p put a stop to the ups package and are sending me the 96.00bore. its only gonna cost me 350$ to machine the block to the piston size. as for the bearings i was told even stock should sufice since they are pretty good from factory. feel free to chime in as to why or why not aftermarket bearings.
