Default Gas Smell On full tank ?

Ever Since my AAM return fuel system was installed on a full or close to full tank the interior will get a gas smell in it. Also if I let the car sit the next morning I will come out to a small puddle of gason the ground by the front of the passenger rear tire. This only happens when I fill the tank above 3/4. Is there a rubber seal I can replace or is the problem bigger ? Thanks, Dave

replace the fuel pump top O-Ring.. I had the same issue.. It expands when gas touches it and doesnt have a seal. Most likely when you open it the ring will be expanded, and that is most likely the cause...

1. Inspect the o-ring, replace it.

2. Also, double check that the correct bolts were used during re-assembly. The bolts that attach the fuel pump assy. to the fuel tank are very short bolts with fine threads. If the wrong length bolts (ie longer) were used you may have a worse problem. The bolts are also easy to strip out due to the fine threads and short length, so you may think about replacing them too after inspection.

You have another problem if there is a puddle of fuel on the ground. The large O-ring on top of the fuel cell needs to be replaced. Like mentioned above ^. You can pick one up at the dealer for cheap. The shop should have replaced it when it was installed. I had a fuel smell when I did my walbro install. Then I replaced O-ring,, Fixed.

If you had a shop install it I would take it back, mainly because it should have been done right. And you should not have any fuel on the ground that's dangerous.

Yea, had that same issue happen to me. The o-ring swelled. Just cut a lil piece out of it. Relayed it down and the problem was gone.

I think this is what's happening with mine again. This will be the second time my o-ring will need replaced.

Something about filling it up to full causes a problem with these o-rings.

Details? What did you have them check? I'm headed to my dealer tomorrow and I'd love to give them some direction other than the o-ring.

Thanks Paul!

Here is a tip for replacing that O-ring since I had to modify the fuel pump for my old turbo install. What I did was put the O-ring in the freezer to make it easy for that O-ring to sit properly. Once that O-ring get fuel on it it expands and makes it hard to sit properly and subject to a leak. It can be a pain in the *** if it gets fuel on it.

make sure that you only have 1/2 a tank of gas or less when you go to replace that o-ring. when the tank is full, the full level is higher than the service port for the fuel tank! GAS WILL POUR OUT OF THE TANK!!!!

undo the 6 or so screws on the cover on the fuel tank above the fuel basket. take out old o-ring that goes between the cover and the fuel tank. replace with new o-ring.
