Default Planning FI build. need advice

Hey guys after several years I've finallydecided I've waited long enough to go FI and will probably be going for it sometime next year. By then I should be able to afford it however budget is still a factor. As a result in order to reduce the overall expendature a group of fellow z owners and myself will be doing the install ourselves. Between us we have a pretty strong Mechanical knowledge base (my father and I have replaced the z's transmission twice and about 90% of the other mods done to the z)I could probably swing something like the GTM TT if we could manage the install by ourselves. Otherwise I will probably just go with the vortech because I know we can install that with relative ease.

Anybody who has installed a TT kit by themselves? Any input?

Any suggestions for kits that are relatively budget minded and possible to owner install? Or should I just go with the Vortech and call it a day?

I am looking to hit at or around 400 on the stock block. Until I can build down the road.

Ps I know how the FI forums are notorious for being harsh on new comers and I assure you I am doing plenty of my own research. Just asking for some advice from those with more experience than I.

really I suppose my question is this has anybody ever done there own TT install. To me personall it looks pretty straight forward but Must be missing something because everyone appears to have the belief that it is above the capabilities of anyone but a very serious mechanic.

I did my own TT install with some help from a couple of friends. If you have some mechanical background you should be fine.

I installed greddy twins on my stock block, 430whp at 8lbs, runs like stock just with a ton more power. The install is prety easy except that greddy's instructions are garbage to go by. A few pics here and there are helpful but its pretty straight forward and only goes on one way.

I will say that I can't imagine how people do twins on these cars without pulling the motors, to me it seem absolutely insane.

IMO if i had to do it again I would in a heartbeat, one because I know what's been done all the way through, and two i'm familiar with what could go wrong now.

Check out the DIY forum there's a build by a guy by the name of Randy, did a fantastic job on his car, look at what he did and see if it's something your interested in.

Really appreciate the input. I was just lookin at then install guide for the jwt tt kit and nothing in there looked tremendously difficult. I'm not sure whether the gtm kit would be much more difficult. I've already had experience with most of the major components. Like when we did the test pipe install and the intak and plenum install. Not to mention
The transmission. (twice including once on jackstands). Also help A buddy do half the work to swap out his clutch unfortunately he has geddy turbos and his wastegates prevented us CEO fully removing his trans enough to swap his clutch and FW.

Anyway it looks like the most difficult parts will be the turbo manifolds, the oil lines and he electronics (might have to cheat and bring in an electronics guru for that part) after that it will just be off to a shop for a safe tune and off I go.

It is my understanding that the GTM kit has one of the best install manuals, ever. Someone else posted, having installed a GTM kit themselves. Go for it! (and then come on by the RTP area and share with us!)

I agree with the above but i was stupid and did the install with the engine in the car and it was a major pita. After allmost 2 years everything is still going perfect as it is my DD.Good luck when you decide what to do.

def gonna have to pull the engine out to install twins... i got lucky and picked up an hks tt for less than 3k with intercooler... you can find some really good deals on tt kit on the for sale section... as long as you have mechanical knowledge you should be fine!!!

To be honest I was conscidering doing it on a rented lift if possible. But I was conscidering doing it with the motor still In the car mostly because I don't wanna have to deal with the process of removing the whole engine. What is the worst
Part of doing it with the motor in the car? My assumption is that it will be removing the headers and reinstalling the turbo headers and the turbos to the turbo headers because of the very tight clearences and height up inside the car. I also assume that the intercooler piping will be kinda a pain in the *** swing as how tight of a fit it will be because of the close tolerances and large piping. Granted I agree these Will be a real pain in the *** if I leave the motor in but is it really worth taking the engine out?

I might just hAve to take your word for it and find a cherry picker after all you guys Have done it already and I'm just guestimating.

appreciate it man. good luck with your greddy tt aswell. I must say I am really quite suprised by the overwhemingly possitive responses from everyone. I am really rather supprised not to get flamed for not wanting to spend the extra money to take it to a shop and "have it done right". I really appreciate all the help and I'm pretty possitive that I will be asking questions through out the process.

ohh yeah, I was taking some time to study other peoples installs and pictures of the installed kit and comparinging them to the possitions and tolerances in my actual car so can further figure out exactly what I need and how to go about getting it done. I can see why everyone says that taking the motor out is alot easier. as you guys have stated it look quite possible to do with the motor still in the car but it deffinately looks like it would be a real head ache.

You're doing your homework great!! I'm on the same boat trying to get into FI but with a single turbo. Of course, I don't have any experience with the motor whatsoever so I'll have to pay someone else to install it for me. Good luck!

The most important part of the twin turbo install is going to be the tune after you get her all done. Make sure you go to a very capable tuner or the next thread you post up will be about building your motor.

Give me a call at the shop if you have any questions or need any parts.
