Default Question about Turbo...

Please forgive my lack of knowledge in the matter but I was wondering how come the 350z does not have Turbo in it already.

Can somebody explain the reasoning behind it in laymen terms. From what I read it is a "NA" engine but I don't even know what that means. However people always ask me how come my car is not turbo charged and I want to have a good answer.

Maybe there is a link somebody can provide where I can read up on the subject?

don't flame me pls..

Just go to wiki and do some research. The VQ's aren't bad and if anyone is making fun of you cuz it's not turbo'd ask them what they're driving lol. PS: there's a lot of great NA (naturally aspirated= no form of forced induction whether it be by turbo/supercharger/turbonator ) like the Carerra GT and Enzo. Hell look at the new GT3's.... 415hp N/A and 4 sec sprint to 60mph... I'd take that over my old fancy turbo 240sx. Just cuz it's turbo doesn't make it better... As for the flaming... get your suit on...

because it's not necassary Just because it's not turboed doesn't mean it's any less of a sports car. Even without forced induction it has more HP than alot of other Turboed manufactured cars.

NA = naturally aspirated. No forced air into engine.

plus, turboed cars also doesnt mean it is always good. There are many NA cars which are fast and slow. However, there are also many turbo cars which are fast and slow.

However, if you wanna shut your friends up and you have money, why not turbo your Z?

well but the benefits of turboing it are unquestionable right? Form what I read on the forum many people do it aftermarket.

So why not have it in at first place? Is it to keep the cost down?

Please stop now, or just fly to Japan and ask the CEO of Nissan as someone already suggested.

Whey don't all cars come with 500whp, or a V10, or 20" rims, or two 10" subs?? Why is there no santa claus, easter bunny or tooth fairy??

We make our VQ's F/I because just lighting bills on fire and watching them burn has lost its luster. We had to find new and more interesting ways of pissing money away and having ton of down-time on our cars. Or.... maybe its just that second of utter confusion on the face of the drivers of the Vettes, Mustangs and Porches we pull away from them like they are driving with the parking brake on.... priceless.

it has nothing to do with cost.. in 1994 nissan developed a high compression race engine called the VQ.. it was to replace the engine in the 300zx... Nissan decided not to continue the 300zx and put the engine in their flagship car the nissan maxima. The Engine was so impressive it made the 1995 maxima sprint 0-60 in 5.5 seconds with a 15.2 1/4 mile (14.7 by forum members). Nissan continued to put the engine in the maxima for a couple years then decided they would try it in the pathfinder, then the 350z, then most of their V6 models except the frontier and Xterra which had the VG and VE 6 cylinder engines.

There are actually turbo version os the VQ.. VQ30DET and VQ30DETT, however since the US version of the engine was always a high compression engine, there was really no decision to make the engine use a turbocharger, High Compression + Forced Induction = BOOM .. even though the original VQ30DE found in the 1995 - 1999 maxima's have shown to hold 560whp before blowing. The VQ was so succesful it won wards top ten awards for 13 years straight. The VQ30DET that is only found in Japanese models, and a couple other models i can't think of right now. That motor put out 280hp/280TQ, but never came stateside.. Nissan also made a VQ30DETT for Japanese race 350z's.

As explained before only nissan can tell you why they never..brought the VQ30DET/VQ30DETT to the states.. but the VQ35 has done well N/A.. hope this answers some of your questions

Actually I think in a straight line the 300zx TT was faster than an 03 350z in a drag race. I remember seeing a video of a comparison on Top Gear or something.
