Forgetting to lower pressure on the DRs at the strip = carnage

I decided to run my 18in DRs (the tires I run on the street) at the track last weekend and forgot to lower the pressure. They were set to 35 cold and probably around 40 when I launched the car after a good burnout. As soon as I launched I got massive wheel hop and didn't even have a chance to get out of it before I heard a grinding noise and the car would barely move.
Turns out the stock inner CV joint on the DSS Level 2 axles doesn't like wheel hop...they had been fantastic for the last 3 years until this incident.

Watch out for wheel hop guys...it will break even upgraded stuff VERY quickly.

similar thing happened to me. i did remember to lower tire pressure but not enough. took it from 35psi to 30. should have taken them down to 22 or so. wheel hopped, got out of it, got on it and now as some of you guys have read, i get a grinding sound from the clutch. at a stand still in neutral i still get a grind when i press and depress the clutch. weird. wheel hop ftl!

Going with slicks is good, but I have seen many Z's go down the track on MT D/R's with no problems. Did see a few that did have hop though.

Drag radials are fine as long as you drop the pressure in them to allow the sidewalls to flex. 40psi didn't let my sidewalls flex at all and that's why I got massive wheel hop. I probably have 20 passes on 18in DRs in the past with less pressure and I never had an issue.
Brian,
What track were you at?

wheel hop is usually cuased by a binding suspension. it binds when releases, binds, then releases, etcetera.
the best way tp stop it is to change out all of your soft suspension bushings for either harder urethane, or , best choice, is to use ball ends (heim joints). ....in some cases, solid bushings may be needed too.
