Southbend Clutch Kits 600+hp
Has anyone had any experience with Southbend Clutches on a FI setup over 600hp? If so how have they performed? I am trying to decide between a stage 5 or a Spec Twin Disc.

i know my SPec twin hasnt worked right from the day I got it, and I couldnt recommend them at this point.
Thom0001 smoked his DxD around that power level as well. Best bet look at an ATS or Carbonetics. If you cant afford that now, wait a few weeks til you can.

disengagement.
granted i am tryin a new slave and steel clutch line in my new build but my stock clutch worked just fine.
Swapped to the Spec and 1st and reverse from a stop were impossible to get into without multiple tries.
sent the clutch to Spec, and of course it mic'd out just fine. I'll know more in the coming weeks.
They do seem sure my SS model will hold 720 ft lbs rw trq so thats a plus And it drive just fine and worked great on the track with my 500 DJ supercharger setup.

i hope so. for the price, its the best twin disc out there. between shifts and in traffic its delightful.
Spec will upgrade me to whatever level i want for a good price. if my problems are solved, the 1100 trq kit will be on its way

in here all my friends who have LS1 and LS2 engines are having problems with the Spec clutch, still dont know why, but the guys told me the problem is with the presure plate.

^+1 Exactly please list the power that your setup is running. Most aftermarket clutches hold well under 500whp, it's above this where it gets sketchy without breakin the bank. These two clutches in this thread are the cheapest option and I am trying to see if it is a reasonable possibility to get one of the two or if I need to just break the bank.

So far my Nismo flywheel/clutch/pressplate has held up for 1yr..
I am very curious on other 600hp FI Z members with dxd setups handling it..

Spec clutches are absolute trash. Why anyone buys them after all the horror stories of exploding clutches is beyond my comprehension (I've personally seen the results of three exploded spec clutches myself when I worked at the drivetrain shop).
The only direct experience I have with SBC is my good friend's turbo VG, he's had two different south bend clutches that really can't hold up to launching on slicks at the track with about 450wtq. After the first one they worked with him to do the second one, it's sintered iron on one side of the disk and ceramic on the other side, still doesn't seem to be holding up to launches, though I haven't ridden with him on a pass to see what his technique is.
I have heard fairly good things about SBCs on customer cars when I used to work at the shop though.
For god's sake, do not put a spec in your car. You will regret it for it's sh!tty performance, even if it doesn't explode and take your feet off or total your car like they've been known to do. Their QC is absolutely laughable.
Lastly, clutches hold torque not HP, so when speaking of clutches how much HP you have is irrelevant, how much torque you are making is the issue.

I think forged pushes the Comp Clutch stage 4 not Clutchmasters. Isn't (or wasn't) thom00001 running over 750whp for a pretty long period on a southbend stg 5?

Thanks for the input, I heard similiar stories from some of the guys I know that run higher hp 240's with sr20det's. Truthfully I was leaning on tryin the Southbend stage 5. If Thom00001 doesn't chime in here in the next couple days I will pm him.

Southbend FTW.
Yes mine finally failed but it was rated to 690b-tq and I was making 710rw-tq.. for 10K miles. And I am still on its just hard to shift lol. I will be swapping out over winter to their new style (850tq version). BTW that was at 769rwhp.
I have the stage 5 full face on stock flywheel. You can't touch its performance for the price. If you plan on going on 600-650rwhp I'd recommend the 6 puck version.
