Talking Had a test ride in the PE twin turbo Z today !

What a blast ! That car really throws you in the back of the seat ! And the best part was, it was not setup for full boost, it had just been retuned for taking to the USA next week and so wasn't setup for Japanese hi octane fuel. The guy reconned we were pulling about 400hp instead of the 420hp.

At idle and medium revs you wouldn't know the thing was turbo charged. But hit the high revs and it's like a race car No noticeable turbo lag in driving it, you can see the boost get real high real quick. Also found out that when they install the kit they also replace the clutch with a stronger one.

Great looking piece of kit too, and very knowledgeable staff who take what you want for the car and then tell you if it is possible or recommended.

A big thanks to the wonderful staff at PE for their kindness today and for giving me a roller coaster of a ride

Yeah got a couple of photos, but they're still in the camera in the car. Got so involved talking with them I forgot the time and was late getting back to hospital. Will post them tomorrow.

As a side note, they kinda liked the style of my car too and I got to give it a good run on the way back. Shizuoka to Tokyo in 1.5 hours Car was running great and handled like it was on rails. I swear the areos of the Veilside kit gives it better acceleration too.

If all goes to plan I'll have a turbo Z by December

Nice to hear PE is moving along! Did they mention a timeframe for the kit? Unsure if I read the details in Chebosto's thread.

Timeframe ? Like I said the guy just finished setting up the kit to go Stateside next week. My impression is very soon, in fact the reason why mine would be about the December mark is because of the number of units they have to do for the USA first.

Sorry, never heard of the Greddy kit.

Bottom line is that compared to the kit I saw at Top Secret, you get alot more for your money on this kit - intercooler, boost controller, larger capacity oil pan etc included in the price. Fit and finish looks nicer. Power is about the same, but the cost is alot less.

That's all I can add for now as I just got word for a house to buy. That should then finally let me know what money I have available to spend on this.

the actual kit will be different from the photos I have. The stainless steel piping is to be replaced by a silver coloured steel piping. Also a few of the pipes that are visible in the demo car are being put in an alternate location and won't be visible on the production kit.

Thanks Cheston for confirming the date

They had also had the engine apart to look for any excessive wear on the parts, none found ! Good news all round.

That is music to my ears! When the tech was talking about 400-420hp, was that whp or chp? From the PE advertising that sounds like it's actually wheel horse power right! I think you need to go back over there, take an extensive ride with impression, pics, vids and of course kill stories lol Thanks for the info on this kit man!

If I had known I would be in for a test drive I would have definitely taken a video camera with me. But I had an Email the day before saying the car was not driveable as it was being prepped for the USA. When I got there, it was the same story, but while I talked with the staff about the car and what I wanted, another engineer worked frantically on the car to make it driveable. So the test drive was right out of the blue. That also explains my photos of the car, I did not expect to see it outside the garage and had packed the camera up before it was rolled out onto the streets.

Anyway here are a couple of shots of the front and rear.

The engine with the pipes indicated that are to be re-routed and not visible in the final kit.

The engine again, this time indicating something that is not part of the kit. That cylinder is an oil collector resevoir.

And finally just a good size photo of the entire setup.

nice.

Funny thing, i just learned PE USA will not allow any dealer to sell below MSRP. Isn't that illegal? I hope that there can be some room for negotiation.

Maybe because the price compared to other kits is pretty low anyway. In Japan they can give a little discount but only on their products. I wouldn't be using their boost controller so they cannot discount on the Blitz one I would use etc. Not sure what your dealers will do in the USA, but PE themselves in Japan just have one installation price that I saw regardless of what you were having included as options. But then only 2 people have ordered the install for Japan so far. I'd be the 3rd hopefully.

That turbo kit/engine bay looks beautiful. If they come to the states with some of the numbers that I've seen claimed, that should definatley help my decision to get a Z

2 things,

1. I thought japan just used a different scale for octane in their fuel, but they didnt really have higher octane by any real amount...

2. I guess this means the power thats in there out of the box is all you can get without getting thicker gaskets or low compression pistons? no turning up the boost without modifying the engine. not the end of the world, but unfortunate anyway.

My take on what was said about the tuning and the octane levels was that you would get more hp being tuned properly to a specific octane level. ie they know what the octane level is in Japan and there is not the choice of getting different octanes, so they can fine tune and get the best hp without engine detonation or engine knock. The USA has a much wider range of fuel octanes available, so they setup the system for mid range of the US octane levels. I would imagine if you stick to a particular octane level and get it professionally tuned for that specific fuel, then you would also get the best results and safe engine build.

What I have seen in a catalogue here is it was possible to put their kit to 600HP. But that would involve an entire engine build to be reliable at that power. You'd want better pistons, gaskets, valves etc etc etc for that. Personally 420hp seems like enough for me. I'm sure I'd get better value for money upgrading other parts of the car after that. Better shocks, brakes, lighter flywheel, better wheels/tires etc etc. As they are replacing the clutch anyway I'm currently looking out for a lighter flywheel that can be installed at the same time.

Japan gets vastly higher octane than we do in the US at most pumps.
