FI VQ on an FX
yeah i was going to say for a stock block and want to be maintain a bit of reliability is to try to stay close to 400whp.. and try to get crazy tq numbers.. bc thats what ususally breaks the stock connecting rods.. wich is the main weak point in the DE motor. i have a vortech on my 03 Z.. and im on stock block and i also wanted quicker acceleration and just a faster car overall but not overkill. and this is perfect for me.. very streetable and pins u back when u wana get pinned back.. i wouldve gone turbo but didnt want very high tq numbers bc i heard thats the real problem
Sort of funny how builds mature with education.
Once again, going bigger and better. now doing the full short/long block build. Goal is to build for 650 on the engine, but the turbo will top out around 550, so should make for a reliable, long term build.
Expensive? Yes. But I'm not doing this as an investment or because I want to sell it. I want THIS car customized for me. Here's the latest build list, lol. Hopefully it doesn't grow too much more!!!

Core block has arrived at the machine shop for the longblock work.
Haltech EMS and sensors, ARP Stud kits have arrived at the install shop
Still waiting on the turbo/wastegate/BOV, plus fuel return system kit to arrive, but the car is going in to the installer 48 hours from now and I don't expect to get her back for about three weeks.
Pretty jazzed up bout this!!!

Longblock work will be completed this Saturday. Two parts are on back-order, but should not stop the install. Expect the old engine to be out by the end of this week, with the majority of the fabrication and install going down next week.
Stopped by Powerfab this afternoon to check out my Longblock package and the initial teardown of the car.
Longblock machine work, plus rev-up oil pump, HR head gaskets and the pathfinder cooling mod.

And the engine and tranny dropped out the bottom:

New motor should be installed by the end of the week.

Completed longblock package, new valve covers & tensioners. Did a few powdercoated parts for custom look.

Buttoned back up, along with a new suspension:

Turbo system hot side/cold side fab begins this week.

So my research into gauges has just begun and I thought it would be good to actually have a thread that talks about all the different systems out there and what the most common monitoring displays should have. I posted this same thread other forums and so far have not had much response. I could use the help from here on my350z where I KNOW there are boosted VQs.
Universal, expandable setups that have been suggested:

http://www.egauges.com/Defi/dp_top.html
I have identified the items that I want to monitor but I am still not sure where the gauges will be mounted and what they will look like. I'm thinking SMALL. If anybody has links to small gauges - from 1 inch to 1.5 inch digital displays - please post up. I think I'm leaning towards individual gauges rather than a universal display. Interested in but don't have to include all of the following:
Oil pressure
Water Temperature
A/F
Boost
Transmission temp
I have seen some gauges that display multiple items as well - with the ability to display of two or three of the items above on one gauge all at once or selectable with a button.
Here is my shop's recommendation, after I told him I wanted to pick only two gauges:
"AF gauges are nice but only truly useful under WOT for critical monitoring, otherwise they are always in a state of flux. Oil pressure and water temp is always useful data especially when the motor is cold - to monitor oil pressure vs. motor rpm. So when limited to two and knowing the Haltech sees its own wide-band, I prioritize two gauges differently.
The zeitronix display is likely a OBDII pass through tool that displays that data then pipes in it's own wide-band. Currently the Haltech will see all of it's own sensors which can be viewed in the software (read: your laptop), the next option from Haltech is they use Racepack and AIM dash setups which plug in native to the Haltech ECU. These are far from a simple gauge though and are generally meant to replace everything in a car to act as a new digital dash.
This all being said, once Haltech finds a new maker for there gauges themselves (used to be Nordschief or something like that but that went under about a year ago), you'll be able to buy a standalone gauge and wick the signal from your Haltech wide-band so that the same sensor feeds the standalone gauge and the Haltech ecu."
I have seen the Racepack display before and it is sweet, but doesn't fit with the theme of the interior. I want it to look like it belongs there. Here are two options from Racepack:

http://www.aimsports.com/auto/index.html
Really I'm wide open to anything as long as the new gauges look like they belong. I'd consider mounting anywhere - on the roof liner, dash, on the console, hidden, pop-up, etc. Only thing that is non-negotiable is the aesthetic. They MUST match the amber OE gauges or interior.
The engine is now broken in and is back in the shop for the power tune. We are coating all the pipes with a ceramic insulator - black on the hot side and silver on the cold side, plenum included. I'll have a dyno to post the day that I pick her up - sometime next week, hopefully.

glad you decided to keep it simple.
