Default I have traction now!!!!!

Figured i would post this in the FI section due to my traction problems all started when i went FI. Well last night i put on my new set of Nitto NT05's 295/35ZR/18's " just the rears for now" running -1.0 camber in the rear. All i have to say about these tires is WOW!!! I spin in 1st, just a bit in 2nd and then she hooks up hard. My z feels like a totaly different car now!!! I love driving my car so much more now, and i did not relize how hard this car pulls in 2nd and 3rd gear now that i can put the power down. I highly recommend these tires. next month i will be getting the matching fronts 265/35/18's. Guess i need to edit my sig now!!!

Jet,
Are these the road race version or the drag radial version?

Good info though. I'm actually concerned on going to them now. I know I make more tq than the vortecs (and it comes on hard), so I may have issues.....but at least we have a real world idea now (and in the size I would need).

Thanks,
Tom

They are the road race/street version NT05, not the NT05R's. i wanted to still retain some of the better road handling abilities of the the tire with the stiffer side wall that the NT05 has to offer over the NT05R. I think these tires are a good compromise between a drag radial and a road race tire. They seem to do double duty very well. As far as i know the NT05R is the newest version of a street legal drag radial that nitto has to offer over the NT555R.

I was running the kumho ecsta mx's, 295/35/18's. terrible tire on the street...I was told that some people like them on the road race track but you have to get them up to temp for them to start performing well.

BTW the only negative thing i have to say about these tires is that once they come up to temp and get sticky they have a odd odor to them. When i put the z away in the garage last night i came down stairs about an hour later to have a cigarette in the garage " i don't smoke in my house ". I notice a odd odor that i never smelt before, almost smells like horse ****. tracked it down to the tires giving off the smell!! maybe it will go away once i put some road time on them.

I ran same tire and had huge traction issues...but they did handle well...they just could not hold power at all (would spin all through 3rd on pump gas, on race gas would roast at 100mph in 4th too....little scary to do that)

Why don't u guys run the r888? I remember sharif saying that they hook 100% in second gear for cars at the 500 whp range.. Is it the price difference?

I am in chicago and am concerned on the cold nights in the spring and fall causing cracking and then failure problems (R888's are R-compound).

I know phunk runs them up here but don't know how often he has them out in the chill.

Also how long will R888's last on street? I have no clue

Good to know. I have been looking/trying to decide on a set of rear tires for about a month now. The NT05's don't come in 295/30/19 though or even 285/30/19....

May end up with Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08.

Yeap, for me it was the price difference. i just about dropped $600.00 on these two rear tires with mounting and speed balance. i know the toyo R888's were a bit more pricey. right now i am also dumping a little bit of cash into my prerunner titan truck which i just ordered a detroit tru trax locker, superior 4:11 gears, PML deep sump trans pan, aux trans cooler and transgo shift kit so i need to chill on the spending a little bit and make compromises to some degree. Must be the old man in me comming out!! ha.ha......... man i can't leave anything stock!!!

Instead of telling stories about pulling hard and smoking tires why not show us here: https://my350z.com/forum/drag/233840...ons-stock.html

it doesnt make any sense to make more HP than your tires can handle. If you are spending 25,000$ on a built motor and turbo kit, run the proper tire. Tread life should not be a concern.

The OP still wouldnt wanna run those tires at the strip anyhow, so posting times wouldnt matter too much.

Could not have said it any better!! i feel i have hit this balance where i have the traction now that fit's my power output. At this point i am happy with the car and the amount of power it put's out. it is very fun to drive and can still overtake/outperform 90% of the car on the street. i have been running this setup for about two years now and am still satisfied with its performance. Plus i am sick of dumping money into this thing!!!! it's funny how a vehicle with less power " that can put it to the pavment" can be quicker than a vehicle with crazy HP figures and just sits there spinning its wheels hopping for traction...

I agree.

There is a certain point where normal streets just can't hold anymore power no matter the tire.

I think the max most streets, with a good sticky tire, can take at normal speeds is in the 650rwhp range. Above that you are gonna spin until high speeds.

I am looking at the nitto's (both nt05s, and 555r's). I am also considering a slightly taller tire for more gear multiplication to help out in traction (taller > wider for traction, if you have the tq)

Tom
