Last time around Roger told me not to worry about changing the oil/filter until the break-in period was over. That is what I did.

This time around I have two concerns. I lost two rod bearings. I shut the motor down fairly quickly, and I am replacing all oil lines and the oil coolers, I have a new short block, and the heads have been thoroughly cleaned. Still, I am going to play it ultra safe and change out the oil/filter very early. I'm leaning toward a dyno break-in based on the one article I found that actually provides what appears to be objective evidence as to the benefits of a dyno break-in, and based on my experiences with my stock motor. After the short break-in period, I am going to change the oil/filter again.

It may be overkill and a complete waste of money, but in comparison to the overall cost of the build, the cost to replace the oil/filter a couple of times is peanuts, and will give me good piece of mind.

If you really want know how your engine is doing then, I would suggest that you send a sample to a company like blackstone labs for a oil analysis. Do this with your break in and the next 2 oil changes. It will really give you a good idea of what is going on in the engine.

Yeah Im looking into oil analysis. I work for shell oil, we have labs on my site that do the fuel/oil testing for ferrari so im going to chase up a few lab tech's on my night shifts and see if they have time to test my oil!
