Default Question about UTEC Basemap when driving to a shop for a tune...

Im going to be installing the Powerlab kit and had a question about the UTEC Basemap.

Is the basemap provided with the kit safe enough to drive 2 hours to my local shop for a tune? Im assuming the average speed will be around 60-65mph since its mostly highway miles. I wont be shifting past 3k RPM and i would be babying the car as much as possible.

Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Alfredo

If you stay out of boost and are using injectors similar in size to what is included or recommended in the kit you should be fine. Chances are you will just run a bit rich.

Depending on where you are getting tuned, some shops will send you a base map via internet that you can load with a laptop for the drive down.

What fuel system and injectors are you running? If stock you'll be fine with the utec completely bypassed (map 0), just remove the belt.

If you've got large injectors (e.g. 600cc), I recommend leaving them off for the drive and having the shop put them on.

with the UTEC, just make the 0% column under fuel -10 all the way thru and it should drive just fine to the shop with the 600cc injectors as long as you dont romp on the gas or try to get into boost.

With the haltech, you need a built base map as your starting params, etc are all user definable and very finicky. The UTEC uses the stock ECU for starting.

thanks str8dum1. im just nervous of when im going about 65mph. im pretty sure that would be in boost slightly. hopefully it goes well.

are there any things that i should be cautious of? like for instance, downshifting to slow down...should I rev match? or should i not downshift all together and just hit the brakes like an auto car. i know its inertial load that kills our stock rods...maybe im just overanalyzing.

also, do most people get their car towed to shops for their first tune after install? or just use the basemap to drive down there...jeffie7 where u at?!?! haha..

Thanks again.

Negative, be light with the gas pedal and you will be in vaccum the entire time. Just drive like your mom and it should be fine.

Im pretty sure boost is building a lil at 2.4k considering ive seen PL kits hit full boost at like 3.5k rpms maybe even a lil less. Just drive real slow n cautious... Keep it in 6th and drive like 50-55? That should help u be more in vacuum. A buddy of mine drove from Kendall to a tuner in West Palm Beach just fine. Took him like 2 hours but he made it there no problem....

Shift below appx 3K and you shouldn't build boost. Remember, there is some lag time between spooling and building boost. Just drive using the tach as the limiting factor and everything is fine.

jtgli is driving his utec untuned 120+ miles and two states away today to get tuned.... drive responsibly and its a non isssue.

You will be fine as you will not build boost untill the engine is under load. When i installed my Greddy twin setup i was in the same boat as you and just made sure not to see boost at all and was fine when i got to my tuner.

building boost depends on the load of the motor. you will not build boost with a light acceleration regardless of rpms. you can run 6000 rpms and not build boost.

Can't you remove the WG spring so it is impossible to build boost?

With my turbo setup.. hal, said to just leave my stock injectors on.. and drive slowly without going to boost ) once you get there you can then swap out the injectors.

I made it to my tuner over 70 miles away on a base map for my haltech... This was with 600cc injectors n all... Just kept it low under 2k rpms or so n light acceleration. Made it no problem... Trick was to keep it from dying at the few red lights i had run into but I had no issues whatsoever
