Default J&S Knock/Retard system, opinions?

Ok, I've decided to order a J&S system to monitor
knock and retard timing accordingly. Bonus is that
it senses boost so I can have it retard on boost (after
5 psi which is the same as retarding in high rpms for
my supercharger but it doesn't affect off throttle).

What do you guys think? I used an older J&S model
for my 93 TT rx7 and I never blew my motor (lots of
mods but I totaled the car)... I'm getting it mostly
for extra insurance (don't really want to deal with
blown motors)...

thanks,
rob

The safeguard is an excellent system. But do they have an application for the 350z? Usually the systems have to be built with the specifications and tolerances of the motors/cars. I believe this is how it works.

I'm not positive, but I don't think this thing will work with the Z's ignition. Does this think plug directly into the ECU?

from what I can tell, you will have to cut the ignition wires
and tap into the ks and pwr/gnd lines.

I'm exchanging email with the maker now and he seems
confident it will work with our cars. I did email him the
service manual diagrams for the g35c.

I'm know it's a great product because I've used it before
but I was more asking if any experts think this is good or
overkill. The service manuals says that the stock knock
sensor is for emergency situations only because the stock
af maps are in the "anti-knock" zones. Anyone know how
much it can retard ignition when activated? The JS unit
can retard up to 20 percent.

thanks,
rob

it will work. i was really close to ordering one also...

john is a great guy, and the product is awesome (i had one on my subaru)..

the only catch with it workign on the Z, is the fact it uses dead spark.. this means your spark plugs will fire on the exhaust stroke also... not a big deal, but it still kinda scares me.

Michael - I can't believe what you have done to your car man, looks awesome!

Another prior J&S user (never had one on my Subaru, but we used on loads of customer cars we turbocharged as SKiDaZZLe knows - they work very very well

It has been used by MardiGrasMax on a VQ application with great results. It is on a 4th Gen Maxima with a Stillen SC, and I think he runs over 12 lbs. of boost.

Do a search and you will find some of his post on this, he is VERY knowledgable. It seems like a great thing to use on a boosted Z.
