Default Twinturbo with single 3" exhaust and 3" Y-Pipe?

Hi,

Im riding a stage 2 HR TT GTM Turnkey kit with a built motor. I got AAM 2,5" cats and a 2,5" APS true dual. But Im not happy with the sound. Would it be crazy restrictive or something to go the AAM 3" Y-pipe and the AAM 3" Single exhaust?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Thanks,
Alex.

If you look at the area of a cross section of a 2.5 vs 3.0 in pipe...

twin 2.5in = 4.90sq*in * 2 = 9.8sq*in

single 3.0in = 7.065 sq*in

So two 2.5in pipes should flow more than a single 3.0.

Now if you go to a single 3.5in that is 9.6sq*in which is pretty close to the twin 2.5 pipes.

So in summary, you will see more restriction, less power at same boost, etc.
But how bout a exhaust cutout too? That would help a lot actually.

(FYI, I run a 4in Y and midpipe)

Tom

Sure the 2x 2,5" gives more hp, but the sound sucks at the moment. If it would cost me 5 hp it wouldnt matter if I have the single exit sound instead . Why not go with 3,5"? Got a great deal on a used 3" AAM and the Y-pipe.

I already killed the little resonators up front of the APS true dual. At the weekend I will take the rear muffler away. That I will have an idea how the sound will be after I killed the rear muffler and connect the pipes with the tips in a straight line.

Its not just power, you will incur more lag with a more restrictive exhaust.

i dont think sections past the Y will matter as much. You have 3" downpipes right? On the log mount turbos, those DP are quite long, so i doubt he would incur any extra lag.

Are you keeping the 2.5" cats?

Yes, I gonna keep the cats. Dont know about the downpipes. r35 Skyline also just has a "single" or one pipe exhaust, and its also "twined".

OP - If I may ask, what's wrong with the sound of the 2.5" APS True Duals? I was just about to purchase one, but will wait pending your answer. Thanks.

Sound itself is nice. But much too quiet. On the otherhand I think a 3,5 or 4" exhaust will drone
