When i spoke to the guy who developed the Hydra (he was tuning a 500whp WRX at the time) he was talking to me about it, and quite frankly he didn't sound very convincing. He said himslef there are better EMS options out their, but he knows how to work his product so that is why he stands behind it. It is still a powerful EMS, but for the price you can get better ones that are more user friendly, atleast for our pltform that is. I'm sure the Hydra probably works better on other cars than on ours, like the WRX for example.

First things first they all have there up and down sides to all ecus! As they all have some good features and not so good. However I would like to clear up any misconceptions first you can buy the unit from any hydra dealer there all listed on the website so you can get and get it tuned by any one of the many hydra dealers accross the country and internationally. The reason that we went with the hydra is that it is a very powerful unit that controls the drive by wire factory throttle body ...which is not the case on some others and the fact that it allows full 32 x 32 varible cam control ..which in some case especially if you have a cams in your car allows you to get the most out of it by having complete adjustability... The price point is 2150.00 which is cheaper than most stand alones...yes it will eliminate the trac. control but so will most stand alones but it does not interfere with your a/c climate control, speedo or any guages ....Honestly I think the reason more people dont go to it... Is marketing!...they just dont do a lot of it ...the guys that developed it are all engineers and there only into making it the best unit out there ....i guess everyone will have an opinion on this but at the end of the day its the tuners choice of what he is more comforatable with ..Vinny likes the hydra as it direct plug and play no wiring at all, and he has them for sube , toyotas, mitsu evos, nissan, mazdas, and hondas...as all hydra dealers do ...if you guys are smart you should contact vinny as there is oportunity to become a hydra dealer since everyone is either a aem or haltec and have there local areas already spoken for ...where as hydra has no intention of flooding the market with tuners...another reason i like hydra as they support there tuners ...when i called hydra usa i was refered to vtr and called over there and i got vinny on the phone and he answered all my questions with no drama and no attitiude ....thats just my opinion!

well, the reason i asked is because i just openedmy wallet to a used powerlab ST kit , and he used the Hydra EMS. When I talked to him about it, he said it gave him no problems, nor did he report driveability issues. However when i researched it on the internet, it seemed it was a rather popular choice for WRX and SRT-4s. Not too much reviews for the VQ engine. With that said, I'm really planning on off-loading it for dirt cheap.
I don't want to disparage it, however with the shops local to where i'm at, i'm inclined to go with an UpRev/Osiris, or Haltech.
here's the link to the kit i'm picking up mid-Oct. Taking a special trip to the Bay Area simply for this, LOL

I inquired about the Hydra - it didn't work on the 5AT and I expect still does not. The DBW functionality it provides is incompatible with the TCM (among other little quirks mentioned related to losing the stock ECU).
I think the reason the Hydra has not taken off is because quite simply, there are similar well-established options available at a similar price point... The Haltech provides 32 x 32 cam control, retains factory traction control, provides additional traction control options utilizing the stock CAN bus to read stock wheel sensors, etc. The ProEFI 128 provides a whole slew of additional functionality over the Haltech but costs a good bit more with all the goodies to support the extended functionality. The hydra cannot compete with that - and hasn't.

Honestly you do what your local tuner is most comfortable with, We use Hydra because that is what vinny uses and is comfortable with and is an expert at. So **** off, he only has the fastest Z in the world...

Sell your hydra to me.
forums are forums . Rockys car seem to run constant low 10 sec passes along with it. Hell don't even mention how vinny has about 15 550++ whp z' tuned with the split second box. To people on these forums that is absurd.

There are plenty of UTEC's out there pushing 550+whp as well. Although a UTEC (hell, even Uprev for that matter) is 10x more advanced than the SS box or just about any other piggyback, it's still not something to brag about.
