Not sure…but with my car I went with one step colder and didn’t adjust the gap, I just went with what NGK had them set at. Kind of wondering now, did anyone adjust the gap from the setting they come with?

Hot/cold plugs are different models than OEM. The gap is preset at the factory and they are all the same.

considering the only NGK that is 2 step colder is an iridium plug, you do not touch the gap.

How much power are you making? If it is not blowing out or having a misfire problem under boost, don't lower the gap. If it is, and you are using iridium, it is possible to make the gap smaller but you must take care in doing so. Also if you are having a spark blowout problem, make sure you are taking advantage of max dwell if you have an EMS that allows for dwell control.

how would one distinguish the need to increase dwell compared to reducing the gap? and

how does one tell if the dwell should be continued to be increased (ie maximim before you burn out your controller)

BTW - you do not need 2 step colder plugs at that power.

travis, no prob. Glad they got you taken care of. I agree with thom, in that you would be safe with 1step colder for 400whp.

str8dum1, increase dwell first to safe maximum. If spark breakup persists under maximum load and ignition system is known good - reduce gap. As for maximum dwell... testing. We have done it and provide this to our customers.

Question

Hey guys,

I've searched, but didn't see this question definitively answered. With a turbonetics Turbo kit (60-1 turbo), stock compression motor (2003 350z 6spd), 10psi boost, can I get away with a stock gapped spark plug that is just 1 heat range colder? Also, what do you guys recommend as the best plug for this setup? (trying to avoid manually re-gapping plugs) Thanks!
