Default Call out for GTM Pulley mod users

So my friend and I tried to place the pulley mod in today but we ran into somewhat of a situation... so basically we saw that the belt itself was rubbing real bad against the timing chain cover. My friend was like it about almost 1-2mm of rub against the serpentine belt. Does anyone whos using the pulley mod experience this? is this something i should be concerned of? we didnt drill the mod only because i wanted to see if this was normal ( the belt being that close to the timing chain cover) before we went though with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

From memory, I believe grinding is required for clearance. Location of the pulley will dictate how much is required.

you have to machine down the cam cover just a tiny bit so the belt doesn't rub against it. use a file if you don't want to deal with pulling the cam cover off.

Use a pencil to trace either side of the belt where it rubs on the cover and grind a groove out until it passes without rubbing.

I used a 1/8" spacer with groove cut out for key installed behind the jack shaft drive pulley. I have no issues with uneven belt wear or excessive noise.

This eliminated the need for any mode to cam cover

Sorry Max, do not have pic readily available.

Find a washer or spacer that will slide over jackshaft but not wider than bearing and notch out groove for keyway. I used a die grinder with deburring bit than filed until groove square.

With drive pulley off jackshaft measure shaft than go to your local hardware/home improvement store they usually have a good selection of washers or spacers. I personally found one laying around in my parts bin of junk from many years of car projects.

Hope this helps

so you spaced all your pulleys right?

if not thats a poor idea and just because it worked for you, i wouldnt suggest others doing it. belt/pulley alignment is important. if a straight edge does not touch each pulley the same, broken belts could leave you stranded.

No, only the jackshaft pulley. Were talking a 1/8" spacer give me a break, thiers no issues with belt alignment or wear so I stand behind my mod.

Here is a guy with a YSI on a Mustang who felt the need to shave .030" off the back of his pulley because they did not line up.....This is the Right way.....

Belt Alignment is very Important, .125" is a whole bunch to be out.

Are you kidding me ?

People change drive components (power steering pumps, water pumps, alternators ETC ) everyday in garages across this country with aftermarket mass produced parts. Do you think they are all machined to close tolerances that could not be absorbed with a slight belt mis alignment ? If that were the case than you would need precision measuring Instruments to change an alternator.

This Tread is about the Blower Belt and GTM Pulley. Not a power steering pumps, water pumps, alternators ETC. But in this application there on the same belt.

Their is very little Load on the PS, WP, Alt, ect, as little 5 or 10hp, the Blower on the other hand has an 80-100hp load on it.

I've been an Automotive Design Engineer for Over 30 Years, and I would ever say it's OK to install any belt and pulley system out of alignment...

Any Job worth doing, is a Job worth doing well.....

1/2 assed must be ok for you.

The Question is how much offset is ok? If 1/8" is ok, then is 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/4" ????

The Answer is .00"

You just need a Good Straight Edge.

I've been doing automotive repair for over 35 years and a Nuclear power plant mechanic. How accurate do you think eyeballing a straight edge is over 6" span ?

I realize this thread is about GTM pulley, my point was that driveline components in general are manufactured by numerous different non OEM company's and changed all the time without precision measuring.

I agree that alignment is critical and .125" is alot if your talking about machined clearences.

I don't see anything 1/2 *** about it, it hasn't caused any problems with uneven wear for 2 years now. It keeps from having the camcover modified.

Why don't you carry on about how the integrity of pulley being machined will be affected in your example ?

I FIGURED SOMEONE WOULD CHIME IN ABOUT THIS AND MAKE A MOUNTAIN OUT OF ANT HILL.
