Default utech overboost issue

Hey All, new to the forum.. I have a greddy tt setup running off the utech pb system. I just purchased the car out of mn. The previous owner told me it is tuned to 14lbs.. After getting the car home, and getting some time in it, i was able to watch my boost guage for a second under full boost.. i freaked when it was reading 17-18lbs.. since then i have not driven it hard. I did some checking and everyone i talked to said its due to the cold.. 32 or so degrees F.

today it is finally nice here 54-55 and i checked it again pullin on the interstate.. def. over 15lbs..

I was told the only way to adjust the boost level is with the tuning software from utech.. no one around here (fargo) has it..

Is there anything else I can do?

thanks Eric

There is no software for the UTEC. You just hook it up to your computer via hyperterminal and adjust from there. I assume you are using the UTEC boost solenoid?

This is correct. I actually have one connected to my Utec all the time and the USB part just sits in the little net near the passenger's left leg. I got mine from Radio Shack, but you can just as easily order them online from tigerdirect; I didn't want to wait.

You can also just use USB to USB, that's what I use and it works perfectly. I just used an old USB printer cable.

My utec had a USB port and didn't need a USB to Serial adapter.

Ok, so now i went into a tuner shop here in town, and they are "warning" me not to go in and do it myself. They said that if the utech lost programming that all the fuel maps and everything will need to be re-done and recommended that i go back to the cities and have a proffesional and someone that is more familiar with utechs go in and make the change..>

I am hearing from here that it is a simple thing to go in and turn the boost down, and from the shops (the local and the one that built the car - RS Motors in mpls) that this is not just a simple thing to do..

Also- my utech was purchased in 05-06.. don't know if that makes a difference.. E

Hi Eric, it's easy to set the boost level in the utec boost map if you are using that device to control your boost. I first would check my vacum lines and make sue they on tight to the wastegates. If they are loose or have fallen off bursnt pinched the wastegate won't see true boost.
I can send the files you need for your laptop to be able to do it yourself including the manual.

Oh man, That would be Awesome!
I will send you a pm with my email address you can send it to..
Thanks a bunch!

Just to double check, I won't or shouldn't need to re-map it correct?

ya, i definitely would check the vac lines first.

also, that guy is full of crap. Turning your boost down won't change your map. All it will do is limit the map to the lower boost cells. If all your connections turn out then i would adjust the boost controller down.

also, as another thought, is the boost gauge the same as what the ecu is reading from? Boost gauges are notorious for being off. Mine reads 1psi higher than my actual boost on my haltech. I trust the haltech before i do a secondary boost gauge. Do record a log on the utec and see what the utec is actually seeing.

i would pressure test them or just replace them. Pinholes can cause a boost leak and you might not see those with the naked eye.

the only thing I can tell you is that they used all goodyear tubing.. and at the boost solinoid it litteraly looks brand new.. i will see the rest of it here this morning.. let ya know what I find out! E

Alright.. .
So all lines looked good.. no way to pressure test.. (don't have the equip).
everything was tight & appears to be fine.. things I did notice= 1 greddy wastegate and 1 Tial wastegate.. (wierd)
1 bigger supply line and 1 smaller supply line (oil for turbos)
do the boost solinoids ever go bad? also, there is a line that goes from the boost solinoid to another sensor of some type that has wires coming off it..
Can anyone tell me what that is?

found download drivers etc. on turboxs.com
downloaded the drivers, and 350zdutec 2.8d software

plugged in to utec through usb-printer cable plug....

error: can not open due to missing drivers...
ok, click on downloaded driver folder on desktop-choose a program to open this file.. nothing works.. choose office word, error: drivers for usb utec cannot be opened do to problem with the contents..

try to open software - same thing..

Question: do I have to be plugged into the utec while downloading and running the program off of turboxs?

I didn't need drivers on XP or Vista... those are just USB to Serial drivers since the Utec has a USB to Serial chip running the USB port. Modern operating systems already have these...

Word of advice before continuing... read the UTEC 350z manual front to back. Then, read it again. Extra credit: read it a 3rd time.
