Default DE headgasgets, deciding on which.

Finally got the motor out and started dissembling it last night out of a used boosted z i bought that jotech built.

Turns out the headgasket failed because they were using a stock DE headgasket and stock head studs. trying to budget this down to $1000 in parts to get it back together, So what is everyones thoughts on headgaskets? looking at cosworth but i really don't want to pay $560 for a pair. Been reading up on cometic and they seemed to have some early failures and received a bad rep, has anybody used them recently since they revised they're design? They are quite cheap is the only reason im hesitant to put them back in a 600 whp build would hate for them to let go again after the motor goes back in.

As of now on my list to purchase:
Arp L19's
cosworth headgasket's
Rev up oil pump
pathfinder mod
and then standard gasket replacements on everything else valve covers lower plenum all exhaust gaskets etc.

anything I'm missing while i got it out?

i think some use the oem hr head gaskets and studs with success. you have to modifiy the block though for one of the water ports. there is a thread somewhere. should a cheap package

Jkenefic learned that the HR head STUDS failed at ~600whp, the gasket is fine, but would require the extra machining.

The HKS aren't cheap, but the are effective and will hold power. Cosworth are fine too, just paying more for the name. Cometic are usually used for people needing a thicker gasket or running 100mm bores.

I think Dynosty uses the Cometic HG on all their engine builds. I know a couple of my customers are using these as well without any issues.

not sure where you are buying man but z1auto sells hks headgaskets for $330 a pair, or if you arnt really concerned about sponsors and want the cheapest price they sell them here for $290 a pair, worth the little bit extra imo.

^absolutely not, we have a set of stopper gaskets made for us. I do not recommend Cometic. Our stopper gasket is multilayer with a stopper ring, similar to the HKS. HKS has a good product, but only available in one bore and we needed a solution for all bore sizes. We stock all of the brands as well as L19 head studs, but recommend our Dynosty ProSeal Stopper gasket, found in all of our builds currently from NA to extreme turbo/nitrous setups. Call to order, 859-230-9027

Must have changed from when I got an engine build quote from late in 2010. I was asking about the HKS gasket and this was the reply in the email:

"We have built tons of motors and our engine builder recommends the Cometic gaskets, they seal better, but we stock HKS...".

I was basing my post on that email, but that was a while ago and things change.

We did use Cometic for some time as it was only option for 100mm, but due to some QC problems we have moved away from them

i've always used cometic. They have MLS with stopper ring like all others. 180$. 650hp and i'm not concerned one bit of them having issues. The only time they will go out is if i have detonation (actually probably not on e85 now) and at that point i'd rather a head gasket blow than a rod bending.

anyways, most gaskets out there are all going to be good for HP so i can't justify the double cost on the HKS gaskets or others.

My motor was the reason hal stopped using cometic gaskets. There was a qc issue on the gasket which caused air to push into the coolant jackets at high psi. Switched to hks and the problem was solved
