Default Help/truth/sgp build

My car is in the DIY rebuilding stage. Part of the process is to determine exactly what I have.

This is the list I got from Mark back in 07. I can not imagine that this is all accurate and truthful. If anyone has or has had experience with an SGP engine build please chime in.

July 30, 2007---Here is a list of what is being done with your engine build.

• Block & Head oil passages cleaned-
Block & heads will be “HOT Tanked” in a checm solution. This cleans all contamination.

• Block & Heads redecked-
Machine the block headmate surface for the best gasket seal.

• Block Bored & Honed using a Torque Plate-
Insures the block is perfectly round for the new pistons. Simulates the heads being bolted to the block with an accurate load resulting in everything being perfectly square after machining.

• Crank Balanced-
Spin balance the whole rotating assembly. This reduces harmonics @ high RPMs.

• Crank Journals Polished-
Micro-polish the journals where the crank shaft rides. This makes journal surfaces that are perfectly smooth allowing for less drag during spin up. Clears the oil passages and float front.

• New Ceramic Coated Main & Rod Bearings-
This is an OIL shedding coating we use. It keeps everything floating on the bearing surface which keeps the loads from ever touching the bearing surface @ high load/impacts.

• New CARRILLO Forged Rods-
The best forged rods available...rated to 1500HP. Half the weight of the OEM rods freeing up HP.

• New ARP Rod Bolts-
290,000 PSI bolts holding the rods to the crank.

• New CP Forged Pistons- .020 over (8.5:1 or 11.5:1)-
I spent well over a year designing these pistons using the best of everything. They will take whatever you can throw at them plus give you 21+ Miles Per Gallon.

• Port & Polish Exhaust & Intake Runners-
Enlarge and smooth ports for maximum flow & VELOCITY to match the new camshaft profiles. This insures smooth acceleration, power, torque and best MPG.

• New TOMEI “Upgraded” Cams & HD Springs-
The best Cams & Spring available for your turbo setup. The Overlap & Lift are specifically matched to the flow charts & head porting being installed into your VQ35 engine. Allows for higher lift and RPMs

• 5 Angle Valve Grind-
5 angles cut on the valves. This insures the best possible air flow into the combustion chambers. (Overkill really...this is TOP FUEL research but we only build them one way...LOL)

• Set Valve Stem Heights

• Set Cold Clearance

• New Valve stem seals

• New HKS Metal Head Gaskets-
The best HIGH BOOST Head gaskets available.

• New SGP L19 Head Studs-
Designed to withstand over 600,000 psi. (Basically you should never be able to blow a head gasket...EVER!!! LOL)

• New Nissan REVUP Oil Pump-
These oil pumps are designed to rev up to 8600 RPM delivering stable pressure. This includes changing the relief springs. + at this point we perform other additional “proprietery” changes...tricks we learned from 15 years of racing.

• OTHER-
Replace Water Pump w/ a change in gearing (inhouse)
Thermostats with a NISMO Low Temp unit.
Balance the cooling system passages & change the coolant flow design in the block & heads.

Replace the timing chains & Chain tensioners.

Change the oiling & oil pressure to the camshaft timing values to balance out with the changes we make in the oil pumps, etc...

Replace spark Plugs

Engine is blueprinted to our specs-
Basically every piece will have the exact identical weights, measurements, clearances, torque specs....Everything

NOTE: Most of this are things we do ONLY HERE @ SGP Racing No one knows half of this...these are the reasons everyone wonders how our engine programs are so good! Everyone else out there “just bolts the pieces together,”

This is what I mean by "It’s all in the details”.*

The rest is TOP SECRET...So I will not tell you anything....pay no attention to the Nuclear symbols on the side of the vehicle when you get her back...

thats all pretty standard parts and build procedure.

Whats the question? If you are going to refresh the motor, all of that will have to get done again anyhow...

It is just so full of braggadocio and exaggeration I don't know what to believe.

I assumed this is pretty standard stuff but Mark claims credit for a lot...

It would be nice to know who actually did the build and what shop. When I was there I did not really see the capability of this being done in house.
...
"I spent well over a year designing these pistons using the best of everything."..."New CP Forged Pistons- .020 over..."...is this total BS or what?

What does he mean by 8.5:1 or 11.5:1 for the CP pistons? Is this compression ratio?

...
"Port & Polish Exhaust & Intake Runners- Enlarge and smooth ports for maximum flow & VELOCITY to match the new camshaft profiles. This insures smooth acceleration, power, torque..."

This all sounds excellent, its very cool and a good thing to do (expensive) but the turbos are tiny, its an A/T and so I question if I needed the cams.
...
"New TOMEI “Upgraded” Cams & HD Springs- The best Cams & Spring available for your turbo setup. The Overlap & Lift are specifically matched to the flow charts & head porting being installed into your VQ35 engine. Allows for higher lift and RPMs"

Again, my car is an A/T and high RPM can be difficult since the torque comes in so fast and at low power levels. This is an NA cam with lots of overlap. Was this not a very poor choice for my car and set up...?

"The Overlap & Lift are specifically matched to the flow charts & head porting being installed into your VQ35 engine"... (Mark it is a non-rev up A/T with tiny turbos...)

Seems to me the car will work better, be easier to tune, run better and last longer with stock cams for a dd.

Is putting stock cams back a good choice?

THX
