Default Oil Cooler directly in front of Intercooler ok?

I was doing some mock ups on some potential mounting places for my new oil cooler, and I found out that it will fit directly in front my intercooler...will I lose any intercooler efficiency if I mount it that way?

some because air in that section will slow down and also be partially heated but untelling how much, will be further minimized if using a thermostat

Lose some efficiency? Yes. You're placing a heated metal radiator in front of it.

Will you notice a difference in the slightly higher charge air temps? Debatable... but I don't like the idea of air temps going up.

You can get an air temp gauge and test before & after...

I would stick it behind the intercooler…main reason being the oil cooler is going to be creating 200degree air right in front of the IC…I would think that by doing this you are now 'heating' your intake charge, not cooling it.

Are you tracking your car? And if so, how often will it be in boost? Are you trying to get every bit of power you can?

If you are mostly street driving, you can probably leave the OC in front of the IC but it doesn't look very clean.

I am about to install the oil cooler with my Vortech setup and have the same question where to place a radiator. Maybe anyone has pics with their placement ? Is there enough space to put between intercooler and a main radiator next to power steering rad ?

that's a horrible idea....do u know how a heater works...it blows the air through a mini radiator that has coolant flowing through it and it make the air hot as ballz fast...oil temp is gonna b as hot if not hotter then the radiator fuid so its like putting a heater on all that ambient air

I had mine mounted there. One of the lines busted so took it off.

Hard to define but there was a slightly noticble difference on butt dyno.

Mounting it to either side would be better

What other options do you have? The short answer, yes you'll lose efficiency. You are losing what looks like about 20% of the surface area of your intercooler. Do you race your car professionally? If you do, I'd mount it elsewhere. If not, eh, probably not the end of the world.

**Just did some googling. What psi are you running? I'm too lazy to do the math but there is a pretty good chance the air through your intercooler is hotter than your oil. So you would still be getting cooling even with the oil cooler there.

other choices...people mount them under the head lights all the time...there is plenty of choices and mayb the air is/isnt as hot as the oil after it goes through the compressor housing but the point of an intercooler is to cool it with the ambient air so that it can b compressed even more when in the combustion chamber. not saying its the end of the world but it kinda seems retarded
to even buy an oil cooler if that's how its gonna b used

placed mine here. pulled reflector on that side. had no issues. made my own brackets.

just mount it sideways to the right of your intercooler attached to your bumper brace

Ok I got a question similiar to this one and didnt want to start a whole new thread on a very similar subject...

Im upgrading my intercooler and was looking at this one: http://www.treadstoneperformance.com...rcooler++860HP

Now it's 4.5" deep and will be a tight fit but should work in a G since there is a bit more room there than the Z.... BUT... It will be RIGHT up against the radiator... How much of an issue can that create for overall cooling of the car?? Would it be better to go with a 3.5" depth? I have seen people running 4" and they seem to be ok but being in AZ I want to make sure I have adequate cooling...

Don't mean to hijack this thread but being it was a similar topic I did not want to start up a whole new thread.

IMO if the looks don't bother you and you don't race for points/time then it's probably not something you would ever notice. I've seen it done quite a bit actually.

you should have more then enough room, i have a 3.5 thick intercooler and have a good 3 inchs between the radiator and intercooler and several inchs between bumper and intercooler. only clearance issue for me was the 5 mph bumper/crash bar which i knew about before hand and is useless anyway

Oh yeah I got no doubt there is enough room to fit it in there but what about interruption of airflow to the rad by the intercooler being that close? How disturbing would that be to overall cooling efficiency of the rad?

Can the intercooler be 'too close' to the rad?

Again... sorry for hijacking...

I've got a 4" core, it's right up against the radiator support.

No Cooling problems.

I'd rather have some space there if I could, but I wanted to keep the crash bar.

Also, why not the TR1245 ?

Thank you! There is my answer

With a 4.5 I would have almost no space, that combined with my second guessing myself makes me very comfortable and confident now going with the TR1235 ... For my application that should be more than enough and I will have some room to breathe behind it.

Thanks.... Threadhijack over...
