Default turbo v8 swap. 350z or g35?

i am looking for any mechanical reason why one car might be better than the other for a swap. this will be a ls based motor with some boost and an auto trans. goals are close to stock looking, quiet, ~600+hp,

i like the exterior styling of the 350z better but everything else i am finding leans me toward the g35.

same price
g35 are mostly autos so i will get the right council and shifter.
g35's appear to all have leather and a nicer interior.
g35's have a higher(3.3) rear diff which is better for what i will be doing.
g35 has a small back seat which i like.

so what else is there that might make one car better than the other for a swap candidate? 350z is likely a little less weight.

also if anyone knows of any cars out there for cheap i wouldn't mind knowing about it. something with a blown motor would be nice.

edit: i just noticed the ls1 thread above. looks like i have a lot of reading to do. 53pages :-)

Not easy. You need to have good headers for this and that usually means big pipes and a deep rumble in the exhaust. You may be able to be stealthy around town, but that is a maybe. All car guys can tell my car doesn't sound right (like a V6) just by the tone at idle.

Search the marketplace, a couple of shells have turned up over the years. You can also look for people who went F/I and have blown their stock blocks and have no money for the rebuilds, they will sometimes let go of the whole car just so they have something they can drive again.

Only the auto trans g35 have 3.3. All 6mt have 3.5 rear end which is the same as the 350z (auto=3.3, manual=3.5)

I have a g35 and I love it. Mine is completely sleeper except black rims. Even down to stock exhaust with cutouts for my turbo when I want to use boost. It sounds bone stock until I open the cutouts and I'm pushing 650hp without a v8

Yes, the auto transmission comes with the 3.3 no matter g35 or 350z. Plenty of auto guys that aren't boosted swap them for the manual transmission 3.5 to get a little more acceleration on their auto trans. The boosted 6mt guys generally swap to the 3.3 so either way you should be able to find someone to swap an entire rear end with you if you wanted to change.

You can get 350Z's with leather interior. Look for Touring models.

The powertrains of the Z and G are identical except the driveshaft. Auto trans Z's come with a 3.3 diff like the G.

What auto trans are you planning to use for that power level?

4l80e. i expect to have to modify the tunnel.

a shift kit only 4l80e will hold a ton of power.

I don't know about the Z's, but the 06+ auto G35's equipped with the sports package came with the 3.5.

They must have changed it for the rev-up engines then. All auto transmission non-rev DE engine platforms had the 3.3 final drive. I was almost certain it was all the DE engines because I've seen a few members with rev up engines selling their 3.3 from their auto on the forums. Maybe they were confused on what they had.

This is the first time I've heard of this. The sport package includes the VLSD, but I've never heard of 5AT models coming with a 3.5 final drive. What/who is your source for that info?

I don't believe so. I have an '06 G coupe w/ 5AT and sport package. All the auto trans G35's, including '06 models, have a non rev-up DE. Only the 6MT cars came with the rev-up motor.

I just looked in the service manual. It lists the 5at as 3.3 on all models up to 2005 (that's the newest version of the manual I have) and 6mt is a 3.5 final drive. All g35x are 3.3 as well.

It wouldn't make sense for them to change the final drive on an auto in 2006 only to change it again in 2007 to the 3.69 ratio that the HR engine uses. I don't have a manual up to 2006 to make certain though.

350z has slightly more room to work with under the hood, mainly in the radiator area

As far as a source goes, I haven't seen anything as of yet that states that. Even www.infinityhelp.com says all autos were 3.3. Bought my car stock from a dealership and it had a 3.5 VLSD, the same that came standard on the manuals. There's a few others on Driver that have noticed this as well.

Only the sedans had the HR motor and the coupes never came with a 3.7.

Interesting that they would change it right before a model change and only do it for a single year.

well, the coupe didn't change in 07, just the sedan. so they got 2 years out of the rear end switch on the coupe which is all that matters (who really cares about sedans anyway? ).
