Default Vortech Cog Belt Slips

Hello All,

So I have JET MECH's old Z. His car is pretty well documented in this forum. Although, I have no idea where JET MECH has gone so i can ask questions. I have a Vortech for a VQ Revup. Im running into an issue where I have a 32 tooth with a 28 tooth pulley cog belt setup and the tensioner will not hold tension on the cog belt. The Belt I bought was a 560-8MGT-20 from Oriely. Keeps slipping as I get past 5LBs. Didn't slip before. When I tighten everything down. I can still spin the tensioner pulley by hand.I just purchased a smaller 480-8mgt-20 belt in hopes of solving my issues. In the case that its too small, any advice?

I can help you.......

You DO NOT want the Cog Belt Tight, it need some play in the Belt when FULL HOT.

Too Tight and you will Snap the Belt

It is Normal to be able to spin the Idler pulley on the Cog's when the Belt is Adjusted Correctly .

No Other Belt Size will Fit.....

Please Post some Pic's or Video, so I can help you 100%

Hope this Helps,
TimRod

Ayeee. Thanks Tim. I ordered a new belt that would be smaller and cancelled it. When I get the pulley back on ill take a quick pic and post it up. Its slipping around 5PSI. I'm wondering if its my serpentine belt just being loose. Thanks a ton!

Sure Anytime.......

Cog Belts Do Not Slip

If your Serp Belt is slipping at 5 psi then it's very loose.

Take the Idler up, 1/2 Turn at a time, until their is no slip.

You may want to start with 1 turn as your belt is very loose.

post pic's of your setup, please.

Oh oh. I think it’s the serpentine belt. Your right. I have some pics and maybe I have smooth pulley that failed.

Before I start the car up, this pulley is lined up perfectly with the belt. Once I turn the car on and turn it off, the belt moves across the smooth pulled and ends in the position pictured. Could it just be too loose? The smooth pulley jiggles around a lot.

Any input? If you think I need to replace it, know if a part number? Think loosening would help it or would it just be too loose?

Here you can see how it’s unaligned

I would definitely add in extra tension if the belt seems loose.

I also recommend switching to a Gates Fleetrunner belt. It can handle tension a lot better and feels like it doesn’t slip nearly as much as other belts. (I have zero idea on the new Gates RPM series belts)

Before I ran into belt breakage at 18psi due to a bad power steering bearing failure, the Gates fleetrunner can take a serious beating. (Limped the car home with only two ribs left.)

I took out one of my smooth pulleys that was causing the belt to move. The bearings are deff shot. It’s moving once the engine starts which is causing the belt to shreds on one of the fla he’s pulleys pictured. It’s probably also causing the belts to slip

you guys know if I can pick up this 2.5inch smooth pulley locally or if it’s a dayco part?

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for that part number. It says it’s 3inches. I have a 2.5 inch smooth pulley.

I have the revup vortech which has a different mounting plate design and pulleys. Let me know if you guys know the part number I need or If I can swap them all to something different.

I was able to pick up a pulley, but I got another one that’s showing some wear. It’s pretty hard to track down these darn pulleys for cheap. I was able to grab a vortech one for $50 on eBay.

That’s strange, it says the diameter is 2.5in. I guess they might’ve changed it.

So i slapped all together. I’m making sure belt is just tight enough before I take it for a hard pull on the high way. I brought it to the point where it squeezed for half a dev on startup. Then brought it to the end of the drive way and it start squeezing through the RPM range until it warmed up a bit.

waited over night to tighten again. Here we are this morning :-). Will update if/when I get all the boost

The Squealing Belt is the serp belt.

If it Squeals on start up, take the adjuster up 1/2 turn, then try again and so on until it stops.

Tim you have any advice on the RPM belts? IIRC, the tension on those are far different than what you’d do with a standard/HD belt. The DE has a fixed tensioner and I’m not sure how it would handle recoil without an auto tensioner.

The RPM Belt is top quality, & will provide the most grip. But 2 times the price of the Green Back.

The Green Back HD, imo is the best overall choice. Super strong & long lasting. 1/2 the price of the RPM

I would NEVER use the Standard Serp Belt for a Vortech.

Keep in mind, Not all sizes are made in each type, so you may be limited per you application.

Tension does not seam to be a problem. Only tighten the belt to the Point of No Squeal on Start-up, then more if need because of belt slip, 1/2 Turn at a time.
If you have belt slip, you need to identify the cause First, other than just tightening the Belt although a loose belt may be the cause.

I've never had a problem with the Fixed tensioners up to 20psi on the HD Belt. I will let you know how it got at 34psi..... LOL

Odd, I was able to find the RPM belts for half the price of greenbacks. I was paying roughly 40ish$ for the K060806HD at auto parts stores. Rockauto has the K060806RPM for only 27$

I was reading a lot on the cobra guys and how people are snapping RPM belts a lot easier due to over-tension compared to the HDs. Something about how they're far more sensitive to belt tension, but also less prone to slip due to the elasticity being less than the HDs by a huge margin. Guess its time to find out.

Thank Tim! So I was tightening for about three of four days. then I had enough and went 1.5 turns. no more squeals. tested it out and hit about 10lbs and then pulled off the gas. Thats an issue cause car is tuned to 7lbs. ill probably drop it half a turn for good measure as well. Let me know if you think i should go down more than that half turn.

Thanks a ton Tim and everyone else.

Anyone know a good tuner in Connecticut

Juan

Welp. Called one place 20 mins away and they said too busy and asked me to go a place 2 hours away. Called a second spot who claimed he’s been doing up rev since they came out and refused to touch my car because it’s doing too much boost.

kicking rocks at this point since my guy who tuned my car is across the country. Sad times :3

The last guy said to data log pulls through range starting up to 5500 and logging every 500 rpm increments. Then he said email it to my guy.

id pay him for the Dyno to pull the logs since it’ll be a bit more convenient to do it in the Dino vs the street. Whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ll keep an eye on this thread in case someone can assist :-)
