Default J&S Safeguard sensitivity **** and settings?

Those of you with the J&S safeguard. Where do you guys have the sensitivity **** arrow set at? My arrow is pointing around 9 clock.

I did as the instructions said, disconeected and boost line and plugged it. I then went at a steady crusing speed and started to increase the sensitivity hoping the knock light would blink. It never did unless I accelerated gently or decelarated. The I started to adjust keeping the car slightly under load, this way I did see the knock light start to come on. I ended up with the **** at 9 o clock.

Can you guys post your settings here? I know some of you posted them already but Im having trouble with the forum search engine.

Sensitivity ****: 9 o clock
Boost Retard: 1/2 degree for 1psi
RPM Retard: 4 degrees from 5250 rpms +

Thanks in advance. I had some problems with the safeguard at first, but thanks to John at J&S and Jesse for all the help.

Carlos Ariza

P.S. I took the car to the track , my tires are all worn out not to mention our track is EXTREMELY slipery.

60 ft time: 2.19 horrible
1/4 mile: 13.2
Trap speed: 113mph

This was without the J&S. I will race this years GT class (street class, allows Drag Radials) soon Ill put on some 295's BF drag radials and post some slips videos.

Hey, not to hijack your post. I am about to order the safeguard. Where did you wire in the adapter? It seems like it would be too hard to install right near the ecu. Is it under the hood somewhere. Thanks!

ETX,
It wires to the main ECU harness behind dash. You can set the unit where ever you want though.(just extend wires) Good luck getting John at J and S to contact you back. Don't use his product if possible it is a pain in the *** and ECU will still change timing constantly therfore the J and S is never an exact amount of timing retard. Sorry if I confused you, but the ECU has several timing maps it follows and by using the J and S you can never tell what the final timing number is. Send your ECU to TS and they will take the issue out of the ECU therefore the ECU works to its fullest.

I have a little plan. If it works out ill post how to do it. It should prove to be a very cost effective meathod to pull some timing. I just ask where to mount it because it seems like it would be a real PITA to wire it up at the ECU harness.

I cannot justify the $600 bill to have TS flash my ecu. Mabye if they send me 'Technosquare' stickers to stick all over my car I would do it. </sarcasm> I would rather use a system that I can tune, and mabye wait for them to rethink thier pricing.

I understand the steep price of TS. The good thing is that if you want further tuning in the future(other mods being added) than it only cost $150 and if you to return to stock settings it's free. Much cheaper than a dyno, b/c you want need the dyno unless you want see power/tourqe numbers, A/f and timing are always at safe levels.

Have you ever used a J&S unit? Took me about 45 minutes to install. BTW, John @ J&S frequents this forum regularly. He is one of the most responsive vendors I've ever met. Yes, I met him because he came to my house to do testing on the 350Z.

Why does it matter if there's never an exact amount of timing? The ECU knows what's best for the engine, the J&S just pulls timing from that based on boost and/or RPM. Please explain your reasons behind why this is bad. BTW, did you ask TS about individual cylinder knock retard?

Cariza, I'm glad we could help get your issues worked out. My sensitivity setting is set to the 12 oclock position. I tuned mine in a similar way that you did yours. Slightly under load.

I did not buy the J&S device. I did however talk to John 3 or 4 times before I decided to go with the E-Manage. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I have spoken with in regards to automotive tech. I am fairly certain that J&S' main income is from the offshore racing bunch and I don’t think that’s an easy gig to land. In deciding what device for timing I wanted I came to the conclusion that having both a static timing adjustment (E-Manage) and the safety of an intelligent control (J&S) would be ideal. The only reason I have not installed the J&S is the waste spark wiring requirement would make future gadgets, possibly, difficult to install. Once again, if you want great info from someone that really knows there stuff John @ J&S is the man! John has always been helpful and never hard to reach. If they ever come out with a 6+ channel Safeguard I will own one that week. Hey John, can you hook 2 of them together?
