Default crawdford v5 w/ vortech

curious::

i am wondering if the votech OEM setup (out of the box) would be okay to use with the crawford planum (v5) and a series cooler plugs....(?)

just dont know if the mapping is safe enough for the added air intake the plenum (reportedly) adds, and, if it'd be okay to tool around with for a few days prior to my dyno SS custom mapping session....

or should i get the crawford and have it in hand at the dyno facility instead??? this is a bit scarey to me, as i dont like to have to do 'on the spot' installs, especially when very important torque values and such are of concern....

anyone think this plenum is a good idea for the vortech kit (compliments it well??)

i have the OEM exhaust system installed (removed the borla system today), but plan to possibly go with a fujitsubo Y (and maybe final) setup sooner or later....

perhaps the plenum and the fuji. setup would both compliment the blower well, and should be a second visit to the dyno to have another remap done??

not sure what to-do... need the help of the gurus....

-eS

ps- the borla was removed because i want a different exhaust tone (backpressure??), not that there is anything wrong with it.... (its still unclaimed as of tonite too)

thanks for reading thru my rambles

I think the Vortech kit is plenty rich up top to add the Crawford plenum so long as you get a good R4 tuning done before going crazy. Here's mine:

Yeah, if I had it to do over again I would have paid the extra $300 or whatever and gotten the polished Vortech kit. At the time I didn't have a polished plenum however and wasn't nearly as mod-addicted as I am now. Oh well.

I didn't think the crawford added any HP with an FI application, as its primary source of HP is freeing airflow to the front cylinders, but with FI you are cramming a #psi into all chambers anyway... am I missing something?

Almost anything that aids intake or exhaust breathing is going to compliment the Vortech. Just get some custom tuning to take full advantage of the combo and be sure not to run too lean.

I think that is the only place you can get it.

I have to disagree... Most people are hitting (avg) 370-380 with the Vortech kit. I'm hitting 420+rwhp... most likely do to upgraded cams and the Crawford Plenum... exhaust upgrades are similar to what I have seen on other Vortech equipped Zs.

All I know is that I had to add fuel above 5000 rpms when I added the Crawford plenum and high flow cats.

mcduck, I think a lot of the reason you're getting 420rwhp is because of the extra boost you're seeing.

zimbo...

probably true, but my Vortech is installed just like everyone else's. If my boost is higher, then I figure the other mods are helping me generate the higher boost number. I can only make the SC spin as quickly as everyone else does! (and I even have the stock rev limiter)

Isn't the Vortech rated at 8lbs of boost? Seems like I remember that being around the boost level for those hitting 370ish. I was told mine clocks in somewhere around 9.5lbs. I need to get it hooked up to R4 and look at the reading myself soon.

[devils' advocate] wouldnt the increased ceiling height disallow higher pressure to build up in the intakes?? making the oem lowrise version more boost creative???[/devils advocate]

I have been running mine untuned with all of the mods in my Sig and I haven't had any problems. I have been keeping it under 5K though until I get it tuned.

Agreed. I'm tempted to try the pulleys to see if that's what it is.

I am assuming that you don't mean the UR pulley which would reduce the PSI.

Right. I mean the other two pulleys (which is what mcduck is running).

To clarify... I am running the UR set of 3 pulley minus the crank pulley.

Steve... if you make that change and see higher boost, I think it would benefit the community to share that info. Not sure if or when I'll be back at the dyno again, but if I do and it's possible for me to swap back on the stock pulleys to get some HP and boost numbers, I'll try it and post what the results are.
