Default F**K, I think I just broke something, HELP

I installed the greddy turbo kit, go out to test it. Iam in secound gear, run awsome then shift into third gear abd suddenly I hear this taping sound, that go's with the engine RPM's. I stop and there is no signs of engibe damage( no smoke from exhaust, nothing starnge in the oil, the car revs nice, for the exeption of this tap sound that go's up and down with the revs. IT's very loud and it's coming from the engine! has anyone have something like this??? possible damage? G35 04' 6mt

Oh man.....read my post I just did on the 2004 ECU. That tapping sound you are hearing is detonation or pinging! read the post and lemme know what you think...the exact same thing happened to me. Do not get into the boost until you solve this.

Dont worry....some minor pinging for a second or two wont kill your motor right away. But if you hear pinging...immediately let off...dont try to power through it.

Yep, You beat me to it. It sounds like detonation. Get that thing tuned!

Is it a tapping as in a bent valve or detonation? Is the car idling rough? You may have bent a valve if it follows with your rpm. does it do it even in neutral?

I think he just heard the "rattling" under accel. I doubt you bent a valve. The car would be smoking and coughing, and noisy, and running like total crap...at idle. And it would make TONS of valvetrain noise if you rev it up a bit.

Get a compression test done. Its the best way to know for sure if something is wrong.

detonation is not something that is constantly there or something that increases or decreases with revs. Sounds like something mechanical. Go over everything, from belts, to ensuring the engine cover is tightened down (or off)....definately sounds like something is loose

Thanks guys, it's pinging since it does it allways (engine ideling) and its a solid tap noise (mechanical). It's very strange! because the engine revs good. I read your post on the 04' issue an the thing is the color on the diagram didn't even match!

It can't be a valve, because it idels perfect. It can be a rod (hope not). the noise feels like it's coming from the heads, maybe a shim broke or something (happend to me on my ex-WRX). we'll do a compresion test on it first.

Fito...I think I am having trouble understanding your description here. If you are hearing signficant tapping or valve train noise at idle, they you may have a bent valve, rod, bolt, etc.

How did the engine sound at idle before you made those WOT runs?

Agreed, its definately not detonation if its loud and he can hear it when not on boost. Honestly it sounds like a rod getting ready to jump through the block

my first thing would be to check the spark plugs, then compression test, then drain the oil and look for metallic flakes.

fito...where did you go?

i still cant understand his description of exactly what happened here?

Did the "rattling...or whatever" start happening after he floored it at higher RPM? Or is a constant tapping...from idle all the way across the powerband.

If it is the latter, maybe he has a leak somewhere...like an exhuas leak...that would be my first check. Exhaust leaks tend to sound like ticking and noisy valvetrains.

It could also be a main bearing gone bad. Car would run just fine but you would here a constant tapping. This would not be good.

I think you have an exhaust leak. You can get a variety of strange sounds when you have an exhaust leak. They will follow the rpms up and down and can sound like tapping .

Check all the bolts on your turbos and manifolds.

Well, I'll tell you guys, I floored it in 2 gear shifted into 3 gear and when I let go on the throttle, I hear this loud tapping noise(metal to metal like. When I press the clutch I can feel the tapping on the pedal, but the sound does not change with the pedal depressed. My mechanic thinks it's coming from the valve train and I thinks it's coming from the timing cover. It's a metal to metal kind of sound. I have bent rods in other cars and sounds different, I once broke two shims on my WRX and it sounded very similar, the only thing is the WRX would't idel perfect, but the G35 does. We'll take compression test tomorrow and start looking.
