Default upping the ante...... vortech style

welp, i said i was gonna leave the 8lb pulley on for awhile, and i guess i did (logged in 948 miles with it!!)

i am going to the slightly smaller serp. pully today, and found a smaller belt (one series smaller than the one boog posted) to use for the shortened distance....

below are the same pulleys (the unlabeled one is from grubbs, the other from vortech)

notice anything suspect??

im still waiting for grubbs to give me a RA number so i can return the damaged pulley, but WOW!!

imagine how much beltdust that'd create!!

glad i spotted it (although i couldnt imagine not)

will report back on the belt number i wound up using, once done (have three different ones to try out)

So the 9lb pulley is not made by Vortech, but by Grubbs? The lack of part number on the pulley.

i was wondering that too....

how do you sort unlabelled pulleys?? seems too easy to mix them up, imo

grubbs just drop shipped the unlabelled one to me, im told....

i wish i would get a RA already; (ahem, ahem)

-eS

ps- the two belts i am gonna have fitted are both gates belts, not goodyear belts (thicker grooves to them too)

The Vortech pulley size (diameter in inches) is the last 3 digits of the part number. So, what esemes has pictured is a 3.12" pulley. Stock pulley for the Vortech kit is 3.33" pulley.

You would know a pulley is bigger or smaller by comparing it to this directly... though without a part number you could not tell the exact size.

Vortech does have replacement pulleys in 2.62", 2.87" 3.12", 3.33", and 3.48". I've also found alternate manufacturers who make pulleys that will fit in 3" and 3.25" sizes.

My thought is to stay with actual Vortech pulleys for fitment reasons.

Esemes... keep us posted. I'm presuming your next step is to try the 2.87" pulley. I'll be watching for your results!

So you bought two pullies, the 3.12 from Vortech and the damaged one from Grubbs. Why did you get two?

they are both (im told) from the big V....

i had to order out a replacement (labelled one) when the damaged one showed up from grubbs.....

ii only wanted one, but couldnt wait 1+ weeks for a return/replacement from grubbs, so i went to V themselves for it........

i will have it on tomorrow, and dyno time is scheduled for tuesday (next)

will have all the reports then (and charts to post) on the output (and if it makes any higher gains)

boog-

the belt # you posted before turns out to be a 93-5/8" belt (rated as a 93, but not that in length) , and the new one i got was a 93-1/8" instead...

p/n = 25-060926 is what the receipt shows (belt is away from me at the moment)

i now have a total of three extra belts (and two new ones on the car)

thats ONE thing for sure, the ATI kit really has figured out well....

their belts are massive, and even the pulleys are shouldered (to prevent walking i guess....)

i wish i could swap out belts and pullleys for some of those types....

((cpet for any parasitic drag the extra width may cause.... i guess))

just got her back......

feels different

sounds different

how much?? dunno (im waiting till the remapp).......

got into boost a lil, and feel that it happens sooner than before (lower rpm's equate to more boost, and the needle moves faster too!!)

heres the pulley (and subsequent new belt, as installed)

Good work, Esemes... keep us posted!

It would help if you could document any SS box changes that you make to give those following your lead a guideline for tuning.

does anybody know whats involved with removing the pulley, is there a special tool needed to take it off, i noticed it has a retainer pin or something in there to hold it tight?

Default pully

You have to take off the adjuster pully and cog belt . Losen up the top three bolts holding the blower to the bracket . Take off the bolt holding serp pully on . Pry over the blower far enough to get the serp pully off . Not hard . Pm me if you need to know any thing else...Bill

esemes, please PM me with your pulley findings. I'm also curious. BTW, with the 34-tooth cog pulley (my version of the 9lb pulley as opposed to the jack pulley that most of you are replacing), here are the boost-versus-rpm numbers I am seeing according to the SS box:

RPMs 9lb 8lb
3000 2.0 1.8
3500 2.7 2.3
4000 3.5 3.0
4500 4.3 3.8
5000 5.2 4.6
5500 6.3 5.5
6000 7.5 6.7
6500 8.7 7.8
7000 10.3 ----

So you can see that there's a boost increase across the board. In the typical drag race scenario, the RPMs stay at or above 5000 rpms pretty much the entire time (assuming shifts at redline), so with the 9lb pulley you can probably hang with a typical turbo kit at 6psi. What you should also see is that a turbo kit at 8psi is going to kit butt on the Vortech at 9psi for drag racing or street use as shown below.

3000 8.0
3500 8.0
4000 8.0
4500 8.0
5000 8.0
5500 8.0
6000 8.0
6500 8.0
7000 8.0

LOL.
