interesting dyno results(not happy)
If its grayish white smoke coming out the exhaust you are burning oil through the cylinders. Just need to find out which one. I'm not kidding you should seriously get a compression test like yesterday.
compression test it is. this sound bad, but dollar i hope you are right in the seal with the s/c. sound like a better fix (i guess) going in today to get it done let you all know later
The blower should be covered by the Vortech warranty and based on the sound(s) you're hearing that might be the issue. I guess one way to find out would be to disconnect the oil from the blower and remove the cog belt and see if the smoke goes away.
My advice: CALL VORTECH!!

well i talked to vortech and they said it could be a couple of things. they said to check the intake pipe to see if there is any discharge of oil (residue) in the piping, the tuning was done wrong, or i'm blowing past the rings.
so i checked the piping....no residue, no discharge, clean as a whistle (F**K) can't get a compression test done until monday, working all day and out of town this weekend, and called the tuner that i took it to and told them the problem, they said get a compression check done. i would like to do it myself but i don't think that i have the right tools to do so. this is going to kill me over the weekend, thinking that i really have messed up my engine. i hope there might have been another solution to this but at this point it doesn't look good.

I won't be back until late sept. up here there isn't much of an import scene that take it as seriously as so cal. not very many tuners and installers that know enough about the VQ. there is only one nissan dealer in 300 miles. when i come back down i will be living in irvine.

Thats cool. I was going to say that I coulda got my buddy to bring his compression tester home (he's a mechanic at Infiniti) but I'm in SD so that would be a bit of a drive fro Oregon :-)

(15 hour drive) j/k
i'm going to get the unit and hopefully do the test before i leave for the airport, if not perhaps monday. oh and since i'm facing the possibility of some major work, what kinda ball park figures can anyone guess for worst case, or aftermarket possbilites that can turn this into a better situation.
anything would be cool
thanks for everything so far,
dustin
Well I'm not sure what its going to cost but it aint going to be cheap. But since they would have to pull your motor apart IF that is the prob you could go with some forged low compress. pistons and rod. SOme GOOD piston rings and maybe some cams. Hey if you got the cash it could be a good situation. Otherwise, ? who knows. I CERTAINLY wouldn't let this go to a regular shop. Definietely take it to a tuner shop if you can find one IF that is the prob. I'm still praying that its the blower unit but seeing as how there was no oil in the intake piping its not looking good. I really hope its not #5. Someone here is going to go off like a Raped Ape if is. BTW if it is #5 as soon as your car is back together get a plenum. that should take care of the "known" #5 cylinder problem
as soon as i know i will post it. i was thinking about the forged internals IF that is the problem. going to do some research on it soon, i have 6k for my mod work saved up at this point, i hope that is enough to get some things fixed IF that is what i need to do. we will see in due time.
I was going to tell you to check the discharge tube, but you did it. Looking at your dyno, what kind of fuel were you running? If you were boosting hard on low octane, you may have cooked some rings. Your A/F looks in check on the graph but it is very obvious something is not right due to the jaggedness of the curve at high rpms. This is a symtom or either is detonation or eratic fuel.
Typically blue smoke is from burning oil. White/light gray smoke is burning water. This is usually a blown head gasket or a cracked head. With aluminum heads, the odds are a blown head gasket. Black smoke is an excess of fuel. If you are getting a lot of black smoke, you may want to re-dyno at another shop. There could be an issue with the calibration of their wideband and you are actually running a lot richer than you think you are and hence the low numbers that would go with it.

So last week i got my car dyno'd and came up with some interesting results.
Backround info: got the S/C installed in dec. and haven't had any problems. never tuned at install. right before i come up to oregon i noticed that i was kicking black smoke a little a thought that it might be time to change the plugs. got 1 step cooler NGKs and headed up to oregon. when i get here the S/C is making a much louder noise and a little whistle. the cog belt is fine and the sound seems to be comming from the S/C itself. The smoke that was little has turned heavy and under light throttle i get grey smoke and under WOT i get heavy black. so i get it tuned a recommened place in portland(4 hours away) and this is what i get. the first one is the one i ended up with and the second is what we tried to get when we pulled the timing.
