Vortech B.O.V. filter silencer....

due to VERY popular demand (have cleared out my PM box, again), here is the mods i did to my filter, to make it silent....
there are two stages of this;
*the first will make it very quiet, yet a hint of sound will still be audible in the cabin....
**the second will make it nearly silent, with alkmost no audible indication of its operation or presence, windows up or down......
firstly, you need to get the BOV filter from vortech. Before i go on, this is a sound filter, im not sure if ever theres' an ingestion of air at the BOV trumpet, but if there were, i guess it could be construed as an air filter too....
the filter can be ordered here , but i dont see it listed online...
the part number listed thru my dealership is 8H040-175 (9.95$)
the first thing i did was to flip the BOV outwards, but in order to make it fit within the wheelwell, i had to trim therubber boot off, and then push the filter onto the trumpet further...
the oem clamp should still doe the job, being placed on the filter shoulder (see pic), still giving a good seal, and allowing much closer filter location..

next, i sourced some sound deadening material, and found that air filter foam works very well (and allows the air to pas thru still).
i bought a big piece of this from autozone, sold in a box with just the circular-like shaped piece of foam
below is pics of it already hacked up....
NEXT, you wanna cut a piece of the foam to fit into the endcap of the filter (this makes a very big audible change).... i didnt adhere the faom in, just jammed it instead (cut it a bit generous)

i decided to only do the endcap piece of foam, as it was almost too quiet with both pieces in there....(can you imagine??)
depending on the thickness of foam you get, you may wanna do both.....
MAKE SURE to get an airfilter foam, that you can breathe thru (good test to see if it passes air) because we dont want any blockages of volume (just sound)
with this, and a properly adjusted BOV (4-6 threads showing above the jamnut), i was able to finally live with the maxflow setup. I tried several homeade screens and filters, but none held up or seemd to detune the high pitched venting sounds....
this works VERY well for me; i hope it does for you too..

Thanks for the tips Esemes!
Did you mention what you did to the Vortech guys? Did they comment on whether or not your mod would have any potential downside? I'm not familiar enough with an SC setup, but could there be an instant where the air goes the oher way, and get's sucked into the BOV??

what i wanted gone was the UNecessary venting sound mostly... the purge at throttle release is still happening, but its more like other BOV's sound.... not so 'leaky' sounding...
Q- do other BOV's vent at low rpms??

esemes,
Thanks so much for the time you took to help us out. I ordered the filter a few days ago and hope to get it in on Monday or Tuesday.
I loved the sound of the stock coupe. It was quite refined. Sacrificing the refinement for power was something I was willing to live with, but not happy about. If I cannot get the sound levels back to stock, I will most likely have to shell out at least 30K more for my next coupe to get the same performance. I REALLY don't want to do this! It will take all the fun out of customizing my coupe.

HOUSTON....
dont fret bro... im right there withya.....
try the phase one (endcap foam only) bov mod first (then, if you're not satisfied, goto phase two-endcap and element foam combined)....
I hope to hear back fromya thereafter! (good or bad)

ps- ask TIMROD about my coupe's running sounds ... he was quite impressed by the sound (lack thereof) that i have acheived....

esemes, thanks for posting this. I'll likely get a Vortech soon. How does the Vortech supercharger (NOT necessarily the BOV) sound at idle and low revs (normal granny driving)? I want it to be as quiet as possible since my wife will not like it if it's too loud compared to stock. Any sounds clips of it idling and driving around normally?
Thanks!
Thanks!
no clips handy, but as long as you DONT tension the gilmer belt (backside of the jackshaft) then its nearly silent....
i showed my car at the dealer yesterday to a potential buyer, and he remarked on its near-silent operttion (this coming from a turbo s2000 owner as well)
sound clips are likely to exxagerate the sound, as the idling motor will get mostly washed out, i think...
can you stop by my dealership?? i can make an appt. to meet you there.

I'm something like 15-20 hours away from you. Thanks for the offer anyway, I appreciate your input. What do you mean exactly when you say "DONT tension the gilmer belt (backside of the jackshaft)". You mean tension on the belt itself?
Later,
my bad... i am confusing you w/ another that already contacted me... guess ottawa would be a long haul of sorts....
basically, the instructions say to "snug" the belt, but never give any further insight.... you wanna have ¼ - ½ play in the belt, when cold (should be able to spin the tensioner by hand).... if its any tighter, you'll hear it in the compressor ... (its the back, cog belt, BTW)

THE greddy type S has the same footprint (even the vortech info claims that the maxflow can be used to upgrade the gredy), but im not sure if it have a low rpm/vac. venting feature....
???
???
I have tried both the Greddy Type-S and the Greddy Type-R. The Type-R has a really stiff spring and didn't work well with our 8psi kit. It would not open unless you opened it almost all the way and then it would not build boost.
The Type-S was the same as our Vortech but it was much louder and the sound was very annoying. I put the Vortech back in and had 5 threads showing on the spring screw it sounds good and I have learned to live with it. I hope that helps you guys.
