Aftermarket Plenums and FI
There are 3 components to my question:
1) What is the exact nature of the flow problem? Is it a matter of air volume? Turbulence? Something else?
2) FI would force air into cylinders, is the flow problem from the stock plenum still applicable? Stated another way: Given FI, would the flow problem still exist?
3) Even if the answer to 2 is a resounding NO, would there potentially be a further performance gain from an aftermarket plenum?
After reading lots of posts, and looking at the Kinetix and Crawford websites, it's appears that the design of our stock upper intake plenums isn't as good as it could be. Apparently it creates a lean condition in the front cylinders.
Lean, as in too high an air/fuel ratio.... More air than fuel..... right? Not a problem with a lack of air, but rather the presence of too much air when compared to the other cylinders.....
I ask because I don't plan to go FI for some time, but want to start on the necessary upgrades. However, I'm not overly interested in wasting more than a few hundred dollars on things I wouldn't need after I install an FI package.
With regard to plenums however, the lean condition created in the affected cylinders may be cause enough to upgrade regardless. As an aside, any comments on how serious the lean condition really is? Am I damaging anything in the interim by running the stock plenum?
