Default VORTECH dubb digit boost club...

lol

was hoping to have a catchy title....

as i am seeing more and more, it seems we are finding most/all of us exploring the 'next level' of the vortech kits, and swapping pulleys, belt, etc todoso.....

i opted fore the smaller, easier front mounted serp pulley upgrade (as the 312 pulley made minimal peak rwhp, but GREAT across-the-board benefits easily felt when normally driving....)

here's the break-down for pulley dia. versus reported boost (assuming the rear cog pulleys are NOT changed!)

3.33" pulley (oem basekit) ~ 8 lbs boost @ oem redline

notice the close tolerances to the compressor housing!!....

3.33" pulley , BEST belt is a 93" (gatorback is preferred by my tuner, but rare! gates is also good, but suspect to microslip until fully stretched/broken in...)

3.12" pulley (one size smaller than basekit) ~ 9 lbs boost @ oem redline

a little more tolerance from compressor, but still takes some effort to install

3.12" pulley , BEST belt is still the 93", as some have had no luck getting the 92.6" series (gates brand) to slip over... might be possible if you loosen the tensioner alot...)

2.87" pulley (two sizes smaller than the basekit) ~ 11lbs of boost (±) at oem redline

2.87" pulley , BEST belt is 92.3", and it fits very snug, without having to run the tensioner to its mechanical limitations (gates application again, FYI)

i have no data on the 287 pulley yet, but am scheduled to dyno on monday fternoon, (heat of the day, again...lol) and we are gonna pull MASSIVE timing uptop to do the first runs.......
This might be too agressive for the stock internals, but with a superich topend, we should get some data to make the decision apon. I am using this ratio of pulleys, as i found the step from the 333 to the 312 to be very noice, with midrange/allranges to have really benefitted the most (peak gains were minimal). Also, i am hoping to alleviate the need to get anyway near the revv limiter, or the need to wind up to 6500 to get peak blower performance. Id much rather shift @ 6K, to be honest.

The next situation i will adress is the oem fueling needs. Simply adding fuel may not be ideal for these injectors anymore. I know the AUX pump is PLENTY capable of handling these needs, as my FP swells over 90 (i think close to 100 psi) when the boost climbs over 5lbs..... BUT that doesnt mean the injectors arent being overworked , or taxed (duty cycle, right??)

Perhaps one size larger (TT guys, PLEASE chime in) injector with a 190lph intank upgrade would be the perfect solution to this setup. I feel that this is, though, the mechancial limitations of what i can realistically expect from the VQ, safely. By upping the boost earlier, and shifting sooner , i am getting good boost.power, without having to experience this under increased piston speed ranges....

I look forward to comments on this, and wanna see the outcome of the 312 serp w/ 34 tooth cog ratio (again , still trying to get early boost without max piston speeds).

eS

ps- i have spoken, in depth, with vortech (engineering) in regards to impeller speed. I originally wanted a pricequote to return my compressor for upgrades for running the 287 pulley. I was told i did NOT need to send it back and that the 287 will work on the compressor just fine, and that the limitations found/published on their site have a deal of headroom built into them. After this, i confirmed with my tuner who is a 10+ year vortech installer/builder/racer, and he agreed that he is using the same compressor, and getting ALOT more boost/power from it, out of the box...

i will add my results from monday to this post, and give a post of the dyno sheets too...

Great info, Esemes! Thanks for being one of the "pioneers".

I'm on my way to the Vortech site even now to order the 34-tooth cogged pulley and the 3.12" serpentine pulley. I've talked to a tuner and should be able to get it into the shop soon after I return from out of town.

There will be new dynos since I am switching to a shop that has a Mustang Dyno instead of a DynoJet. Will get a baseline of the current setup if possible and the final outputs with the two pulleys. Sorry guys, I will not step up one pulley at a time. I'm paying for both, so both go on the car.

If I'm happy, I'll stop there. If not, may look into the 2.87" like Esemes has... but I think it in conjunction with the 34-tooth will put the car too close to flinging the motor apart.

Great info and comparisons! Very helpful for those who want to choose a pulley upgrade.

Hows driving impression from the 312 to 287?

Looking forward to the dyno result.

Your mission, if you should choose to accept it... is to boldly go where no man has gone before. LOL.

I look forward to your longterm results. I hope it works well, because I will be in line.

One thought, since we know you are going to be close to the safe limits of your stock internals, have you considered upgrading at least the rods. This would be my biggest concern. It will be a sad day if you have to buy a new VQ. It seems to me the danger with the Rods is most pronounced during the high load whle the rpms are rising quickly.

Good deal Eseme....making 11lb's...I would be happy with 9lb's .I got to call vortech again . I cant even get close to 8lb's with the 3.12 pulley .You must have figured out the over heating problem

ina nutshell

BRUTAL.....

it spins like a wild boar (seeing boost at 2K)......

reminds me of my blown 5.0l

no joke.... (think of getting stock boost at 2K rpms sooner.... ±)

Nice Scott,
What's your tuner say about the boost.

Are you going to run it up to redline on the dyno?

did'nt you say Vortech OKed that pulley?
